After I pulled it out for the machine shop to fix the internal bearing issues, I bought a new oil pan and re-checked my work a million times. Go down to torque it to a measly 8ft-lbs on that bolt (following sequence) and it cracked again, on the *same. exact. spot* - so I did some measuring. Turns out, there is an imperfection. For whatever reason, their CNC machine or w/e they use took off extra material at that edge - it's hard to describe, and it's not visible to the naked eye.
I'm curious about this imperfection, I've never heard of anything like this. Are you saying TSP machined the pan rail where the oil pan sits?

Hey Psicko,

It's definitely strange. There is no evidence to any machining they may have done on it - but it has the slightest misalignment when measured with a digital caliper- I don't know why or what cause have caused this. Not visible ot the naked eye, and it's off by some .00x" - unfortunately, i don't have pictures of this.

Maybe one day if I ever care to take it apart again (hopefully I never have to) I'll measure again and take pictures.
One reason or another, the pan refuses to be bolted on there without cracking on the same corner.

I have never had a pan crack on a short block before, so for it to even happen to me one time - bugs me. I always work slowly and check my work twice when I begin torquing sequences.

Thanks,
Andy

Correction:

Now that I think back on it, we didn't use a digital caliper - we used "steel shims" that measure in .001 and .002 increments. If I remember correctly, we were able to slip in a .002??? it would slip there, but wouldn't slip in any where else.
This was more than 4 months ago, I don't remember.

$2840 would be either bargain basement, or VERY suspicious.....

I hope we're not mucking up ls1290's thead, but yes thanks for the headsup...I went there last night, and was too tired to search and find it.

It definitely says that price. I don't know if they are a sponser on here, so I'm not going to mention the name anymore. But, that's an incredible deal if it's right. I'm going call tomorrow and confirm.

They have 5.3/5.7 and 6.0's for that price, not a 408.

I figured that had to be a mistake...I was pleasantly surprised at the "LS1 Tech" discount on your site when I priced a 408 out and put it in my cart. Substantial savings on the big ticket items.Very cool.
