Default 04 GTO ls1 CAM options

Okay. So I'm going with 799 heads on my 04 GTO, LT headers, undecided on exhaust (though it will probably be SLP LM), JEGS intake manifold and 102mm TB. I just can't decide on a cam. I'm between a 228/232 or a 233/239. Its a weekend driver, looking to get the 1/4 down to 11s. Any advice or knowledge will be appreciated.

Are you heads ported?
What compression are you at?
Are you auto or manual?
I need a bit more info before I can give you a recommendation,

It is a manual, everything is stock on the car so im nor really sure what the compression rate is. Heads are not ported and the 799's are the same as 243 (as I am sure you know) the only difference is lighter valves and they were just made in a different location.

I don't plan on doing any head work for a while, im doing this build on a budget (Trying to stay under 3500). I found the heads for 300 a pair, so I can spend a little more in other areas.

Since Ed Curtis was mentioned the Streetsweeper HT would be a decent choice.

Any similar cams would work well. Most would be a Stage 2. Titan 4 from Cammotion.

The street sweeper ht is a good choice.
With 8 degrees of overlap, it will have a choppy idle in an LS1.
it will do what it says.
i had a camshaft from Ed Curtis once.
It made killer power for a small camshaft.

i would consider sending the 799 heads in to a good porter. Texas Speed seems to be one of the better bang for your buck deals for CnC porting. I would also consider some weight reduction and a little suspension work. GTO's are hard to get into the 11's with a manual, full weight, and with stock suspension (which might be worn out by now) with the mods you have planned. You'll want to control squat on the launch as much as you can, and beef up some of the IRS parts so they don't break.

I just picked up the heads and this is a budget build. However, I don't plan to start the build until June so it is very possible that I will have them ported.

I've been looking into cams, and it seems 228/232 .600/.600 112 LSA seems to be a very popular choice with LS1. Any other advice? In terms of what overlap I want in a cam that will work well with 799 heads.

You have displacement to consider with overlap, CR, and intended operating range as well, not just head flow. it also depends on what you want with the car. lower overlap will have better manners and be easier to tune, more overlap will give you more torque in the higher rpm ranges.

the SS-HT has 8 deg overlap, which should give you some really nice power. I wouldn't go too much bigger than an SS-HT on a 5.7L that is being street driven. The cam spec you suggested has 6 degrees. Kind of close to call. I would give a few good cam grinders a ring and see what they say. You never know, you might end up going with different specs to actually give you less so it is better to drive. FTI makes an SS-TQ that has 0 degrees of overlap, 220/224 .597/.592 111 lsa, supposedly makes good power for the size cam it is. should have excellent manners, too.

You're going to want to trap 117-118 to hit solid high 11's in a manual GTO, though, so factor that into your calculations.

Also don't forget your going to need to put the car on a diet to get it to run what you would like do the basic weight reduction and the HCI you should be fine.

I know you have a gto but I have a 02 ws6 fast intake with a btr custom cam on stock 241 heads and I made 444 rwhp 411tq on a mustang dyno with a stock clutch. Track times were 11.4 at 126. That was ***** footing it off the line and not actually geting into it hard until I hit 2nd. That was on stock 3.42 gears also. I'm super pleased with my cam. It's on lsl xer lobes and it is big and it drives almost like stock in my 6 speed. 6th gear 1500 rpms with no buck or jerk what so ever. The smooth part is in how good your tuner is and how much time he takes to set the ve tables and fuel tables. But that's my 2 sense.
