am I wrong for thinking a mamo head is too small for a 468? my thinking is heads are perfect for a 427 to 440. here's my thought

his heads are a great flowing head with great air speed even at low rpms which helps tq and surging/driveability. now in comparison to a 427 a 468 will naturally make the low end tq as well as naturally be more resistant to surging, again which both of those things are what his heads are designed for. so wouldn't a larger 285 or possibly 305 ls7 port be more ideal here with that line of thinking? the only counter here would be a 468 wouldn't ever see over 7000, maybe not even over 6800 so his heads would still be able to supply the air where the 285/ 305 port shines above 7000

I think this last sentence says it. BIG engine which reduces the rev range, and heads that CAN supply it PLUS keep the mid range alive for more flexibility, which helps with the 1-2 PG shift...

at what point roughly are the air demands the same. say an oversquare 427 vs the 468. is the 427 goona need the same air amount of air at 7200 as a 468 at 6700? idk

It comes down to displacement vs. RPM. Or more simply, CFM. Simple air movement.
I don't know the actual numbers, I'm just generalizing here.

I know, wasn't sure if someone figured it out yet

When I put my 447 together, I put on a set of box stock TFS 255 LS3 heads and LOD intake, everyone said the heads wouldn't flow enough air for that motor, it peaked at 7600 on the dyno and I was shifting it at 8k. Tony's MMS 265 heads have already been used on a few HPR 468 builds to great success. From all the 468 threads I've read on various sites the 468 seems much more sensitive to manifold selection than anything else. I'm gonna be the first person to try the LOD on a 468. I expect the intake to work really well but I also expect the peak rpm to drop over the previous motor which is fine, I can gear it accordingly.

yea that's kinda what I was getting at, not necessarily that any head will do well, just that the intake seems more important on a 468 than a 427. while heads and intake are always important, I would think here that you buy the metal intake of choice that fits ur port, clears hood, and flows the best, then pick the best head you can afford

Right, If this were a street car build I would have gone for the Mamo Msd intake, but for this application I think the LOD will work beautifully. We shall see.

I do not. It's similar to others I'm sure.

Started with a brand new Gen IV 5.3, sleeved, 4.185"p with 4" stroke. Callie's forged bottom end with Wiseco pistons. 11.9:1 compression, the MMS 265 heads, Mamo Stelath Atomic intake, 102 TB, 247/261 114+4 cam with .623/.623 lift but using his YT rockers so more like .660/.660. Behind it is a monster clutch with a new T56 Magnum 2.66 first gear, PST 3.5" drive shaft, Dana S60 with 3.73's.

Sorry, OP, didn't mean to derail.

I think if these heads were comparable to others marketed at similar size then yes, they would be, but they punch above their size. At least from my discussions with Tony and others who have the same heads.

440 stroker, I recognize your cam, I used to run that cam in my old 421. Got it from Tony

Seems good in my street car. Little bit of surging down low at times but with a manual it can be driven around the issue if need be. Should clean up the tuning when it hits the dyno. Had multiple adjustments to the tune thus far and it idles all day at 850.

I researched quite extensively. What I found is that you really cannot beat them on an in-line setup. Every head I saw with better flow was splayed and still had far larger ports. The only thing I saw in the same league was the sts273 as far as advertised numbers and approximate port volume similarity. I had even asked Tony about doing a one off on the STS casting.

I will butcher his explanation, but there was a couple of pretty good reasons I backed off of that request.

Bottom line is I do not see these heads limiting the combo. But I do agree on the intake decision for that large motor.

I don't think it came off as me saying his heads won't perform as well as a larger port head, just wanted to throw that out, but what I'm saying is you pay for the driveability and low end with mms heads but happen to get great upper rpm numbers as a part of the deal, call it a buy 2 get 1 free....any head can basically make a nice hp number, so if driveability and tq isn't a concern, but talking a 468 u will get that regardless, then why not save 1000 bucks and get a real nice Frankenstein head and either put that 1000 u saved by not going mamo towards an intake or in your wallet? since the op has the intake throw it in the wallet.....i just wouldn't really consider a mamo head if I was basically just racing the thing. I bought my mamo heads cause I'm goona drive the thing

A couple of reasons I went with Tony's 265 heads over a set like say a mast 305: 1) The mms head has already proven itself on several HPR 468 builds. 2) Looking at the flow numbers they flow more air through a smaller 265 port than the Mast does on a 305 port. Everything else being equal, I will always go with the smallest port that flows the most air. This smaller ported heads flow more air which means it also has higher velocity. 3) The Trick Flow heads have powdered metal guides, some may find this silly but I absolutely despise bronze guides.

Makes perfect sense to me. A++
I would have with with the MMS heads as well for the 468 if I had a 468

Just curious, are those lift numbers for 1.8:1 or 1.7:1 rockers? That's less lift than the cam I got from Tony which has lower duration, but mine is at 1.8:1 ratio (0.720" lift).
