Default ATK 365 LS2 vs Shafiroff 415 LS3

Pretty sure I roached a lifter bore so I’m looking at compete short blocks. I really want to stay standard stroke(in fact I would like to destroke if anything) so that’s why I’m looking at the ATK. But the Shafiroff just offers so much more for not that much more money; better block, better crank, better pistons - is ATK just that much better of an engine builder?

I’ve read lots of reviews that Shafiroff is a great SBC and BBC builder and is kinda new to the LS game - but I really can’t see that as any kind of actual argument. Thoughts?

I took a quick look at the ATK 365 LS2 & Shafiroff 415 LS3 and they appear to be about $1,500 difference in price.

Given that roughly the same amount of machine work and labor is required to build either engine, the difference in cost would mainly be in the rotating assembly ie stroker crank, new rod & stroker pistons.

I think you'll be getting what you pay for with either engine.

$1,500 for 50 additional cubes and an extra 50 to 75 hp & torque depending on the other parts in the combo seems reasonable, so if staying NA I'd get the 415 Shafiroff assuming everything thing else checks out.

Really depends what your budget is what your are using the engine for. Racing or just hot rodding it.

Unfortunately the LS2 builds are being discontinued. GM stopped producing the blocks and we cannot find any more of them. We can custom build just about anything. Shoot me a message with what youre looking to do and I can shoot you a quote. We offer members a little discount and free shipping.

Why would one prefer the LS2 over the LS3? I was under the impression the LS3 block was superior.

I have built both and I prefer the LS2 blocks. The liners are thicker and they do not have near the amount of core shift. I won't build an LS3 block, at least not for me personally. Almost everyone I have seen has the liners visibly off center. You guys just wait, Dart blocks and resleeved Oem blocks are going to be the future. The attrition rate is incredible with these.

This issue is on all aluminum LS blocks, not just LS3 or LSA. Seen many of times on LS2 blocks. Over the two most of our customers go straight to the iron blocks.

People choose the LS3 over the LS2 most of the time because of the larger bore size 4.000" vs 4.065".

The LS2's have been much better, at least the pre-2010 ones. When GM changed their casting process, it wasn't for the better. The later LS2' have been same as the LS3's.
