Had an issue with the back of the cam gear eating into the thrust plate in the last 2008 5.3 I did. Was a simple 3 bolt cam swap and I used the original DOD plate w/ recessed TORX screws. I replaced the DOD plate with an older standard GEN3 plate I had and I never had another issue.
Might not be related, but just wondering what the consensus is? Putting together a 2011 now and I'm installing a cam. Any reason not to use the GEN4 CAM plate w the TORX head screws? I know some timing kits come with a thrust bearing for this purpose.
This is a pic of what the damage looks like, not my setup.
