Default My very own build thread!! 434CID Mamo top end

I have decided to get a motor for my 99 Trans Am, instead of buying a different car. I couldn't find anything that I really wanted that wouldn't make me live paycheck to paycheck, and my wife told me that she didn’t think that I would be as happy as I would be if I just got the motor for the TA. So... for the first time in the 17 yrs that I have been on LS1Tech.... I get to do a build thread!! You have no idea how excited I am!!!

This will be a daily driver. I will drive this car to work every day that I am in town, most of that is stop light to stop light. 90% of the time the car will be under 4500 RPMs. I might go to the drag strip a couple of times per year, and that is the only time that the motor will see 7K.

The set up will be using Flex-Fuel (E54) and a Flex-Fuel sensor to knock timing down when I am forced to run 91 octane.

Race Engine Development will be machining the block, installing Darton sleeves, and installing billet main caps.

Katech will be installing their piston oil squirters.

Mamo Motorsports top end and recommended rotating assembly parts.

Probably going to install the motor myself, with the help of a friend that has done a few of these. Hopefully we can knock out the roll-bar and mini-tub at the same time.

Got home from work late one evening years ago, and my wife wasn’t in the house. I went out to the shop and found her under my race car, finishing up some rivets on some new interior sheet metal, to help me get the car ready for a race. True story.
She’s ok...

Sounds like a plan. I have a Diamond stage 3 on the shelf with new pressure plate assembly. Lightweight billet flywheel. Very lightly used. PM me if interested.

I would rather just go with a new one. Besides, I am likely 6 months away from getting the clutch.

What is the compression ratio and power level you are shooting for?

Overall budget including labor?

Not sure on compression yet. I have to be able to run 91 octane in a pinch, but the flex-fuel sensor will tell the ECM to adjust timing for it. Not sure how much compression I can get away with. I will be going with whatever Tony recommends.

I would be happy with around 600 RWHP through my Dana 60.

I hope to keep the budget under $25k. That is for the longblock, headers, and fuel system.

I know there is a lot more to it than static compression, but for reference I ran 11.4 to 1 on a 408 back in 2006 on 91 pump. It was only 485 rwhp through an auto though. I’d love to have over 600 NA.

Tony said that 11.25:1 would be safe, but I forgot to tell him that I will have a flex-fuel sensor and tune. The Wiseco pistons that I'd like to run say 11.9:1 with 70cc chambers.

I will still have to be able to break the motor in, and go to the dyno for the tune, so I'm probably going to have to ensure that I keep the tank full of Flex-Fuel. I will probably also keep a half gallon of denatured alcohol in the car, in case I am forced to use 91 octane.

Id make sure he knows every detail about your plan and goals so you are both on the same page.

I figure the best route is to install the fuel system now, that way I can immediately pour in flex-fuel when the motor gets installed.

Questions...

Will I even need dual Walbro 450 fuel pumps?

A single Walbro 525lph Hellcat pump should be fine!

On the block ask Steve since it is NA to see what he thinks about drilling bay-to-bay crankcase breathing holes in the mains as the 5.3 does not have the "windows' that the other LS blocks have. This is less of an issue on a forced induction set up. I think he (Steve) said drilling the holes was good for 10-20 hp.

I have the exact engine setup your looking at and one 450 is plenty. That’s what I’m running.
