Default Block is also Cracked

Thanks for all of the replies everyone!
  • Found a bigger problem. I took off the head gasket and the block is cracked (pic at bottom).
  • Been trying to figure out what to do about the project. Might have to put it on the back burner till I can save up for another block. Or sell the project all together or just the body. I'm not sure.
  • For the people that are asking yes this engine was 100% assembled by me from the crank shaft bearings all the way up to the intake and accessories. I followed the GM book step by step and clearance everything by the spec, Gapped the rings, measured push rod length, and degreed the cam(hardest part).
  • Don't know how that bleeder screw got into the cylinder area after the heads were put on and tapped shut and at this point it doesn't matter to me. Just gonna have to keep a watchful eye next time.
Let me know if anyone has any other idea how the block might of cracked or was it just the force of the piston slamming the screw into the head .

Also I guess I'm in the market for a LS3 block. If anyone has one with paperwork let me know.

And thanks everyone for the help .

Yes, that probably got cracked from the piston wedging itself against the wall. Sorry to see that, it really blows. Don't just look for LS3 blocks, as people want a premium for them. An L92 block will work just as well.

Or L94, L99, L9H. More choices.... always a good thing!

Are those blocks the exact same, like do they have the same weight and strength? Is there anything thing extra I would need besides the set up I have now?

Curious to know if the current block could be repaired and re-sleved?

I’d imagine that could get pricey. If it’s a LS1 block I don’t think it’s possible. I know RED will no longer resleeve LS1 blocks.

Sorry to see this OP, hopefully you find a cheap replacement so you can finish your project.

For all intents and purposes, I believe all Gen IV 4.065" bore blocks are interchangeable. Same basic weights, accessory holes, strength, etc. Maybe the LSA or LS9 got a better grade of aluminum, but you likely won't be finding those blocks anyway.
