Default Ls2 lifter trays clearanced?

Tearing apart my LS2 to find a knock and noticed the lifter tray bores have been clearanced. Or maybe someone just got happy with a dremel? Any reason someone would do this?

The tops of the lifter bores on aluminum LS blocks are beveled like this. Looks like someone probably etched the lifter bores with a cross buff or similar, while cleaning the lifter bores, and it left a shiny machined finish.

Thanks for the reply but I'm asking about where the lifter trays mount. If you zoom in on the picture it looks like someone took a grinder to it. I'm just curious why it looks like that and if there is a reason behind it.

If your referring to the grinder markings that run horizontally along the lifter area…there’s a factory casting seam there, and someone was trying to remove the casting flash. Looks like they used a chainsaw instead of the correct tool. Pretty common unfortunately. The casting lines can be sharp in places and can scratch or cut you when cleaning or machining the blocks. That’s why they have been grinded on.

Let's all be thankful the guy that did the job didn't become a dentist, or a brain surgeon!!

I used to see that all the time on stock blocks, so I’m pretty sure that is done at the factory.

This exactly. Thats done from the factory. I've torn down a few hundred engines (probably in the 4 digits actually) and every one is like that. On my own engines, I smooth out that entire area and Glyptol coat it it. Inside the valley too. But that's just me. I tend to make mine purty inside and out.

Absolutely correct. I've seen many die grinder tracks on many parts. Nobody at the OEMs care how many sharp edges there are or where they are. Zip ties can be like razor blades! In fact, the test stands we built used to use Zip ties for grouping wiring harnesses. Ford, our best customer, stated no more Zip ties on the wiring looms, due to the cut risk. We went to Velcro loops years ago. No more cut problems on the wiring looms. The stuff works.
