Default LS2 Forged Piston.

Ill keep it simple .
I have a Bare block thats freshly cleaned,Hot tanked,Honed and Cam bearings. I want to throw in a forged piston before putting it back together. If I find a 4.000 inch piston, will I be fine with the fresh hone and no bore ? Im aware crank will need rebalancing.

Unless it was a dingle-ball "hone", a proper "hone" on a sleeved block will be a small overbore on the order of 0.005". Measure with a bore gauge, and email or call your favorite piston company.

Did you measure bore taper or is this a budget build? Budget forged is a set of DSS or Summit(better) pistons. Use good rings, Napier second, steel top. Totally worth it.

By hone i assume you mean it was just lightly honed, and not oversize. I have an LS2 i assembled myself, it was a low mile short motor in very good condition before i pulled it apart, gave it a quick hand hone with a dingle ball hone and assembled it at 4.000" stock bore with new JE fsr pistons. Doesn't burn a drop of oil and runs very strong. I never touched the cam bearings in it, still factory, they were fairly mint.

I used a 24x crank from another late model ls1 that had gen4 rods in it from factory. The JE fsr pistons i believe were lighter than the factory pistons from that engine, i forget the weights now. I did not get it balanced. You will only need to balance if the combined weight of rods/pistons/pins etc is heavier than stock, otherwise if it's lighter, run it. Mine runs perfect all the way to 8000rpm

You are all correct . It was a ball hone to clean the walls up for a fresh rebuild. As far as I know,it should be stock bore minus the very small amount from the ball hone. I was figuring if I could find a piston the same dimensions as stock,I should be fine without an overbore Im no expert tho .

You should be ok then. Just make sure the pistons and rings you purchase are for 4.000" bore, and they are to suit whatever heads and crankshaft stroke you are using. Not sure i.f you are going stroker crank or not.. if aftermarket stroker crank and rods then it will all need balancing. If you are using a stock gm ls1/2/3 crankshaft and gen4 rods, you do not need to balance it

Mine are custom GM heads from 24hr daytona nascar. They're not a factory ls7 vette casting. They're basically an ls7 head but with smaller chambers and valves (2.10/1.55) to suit a 4.000" bore and smaller CI engines. And custom rocker setup. Intake ports are also smaller than an ls7 vette head at 235cc. I have no idea on the exhaust port volume, all i know is they looked huge.

You can still find these heads for sale but not the T&D rockers to suit them. By the time you get new T&D rockers made for them now it's probably not worth it.

I think there's some other aftermarket small bore ls7 heads available, i haven't looked. There's good small bore ls3 heads available now also that flow a heap
