Default LS 3 Connect and Cruise will not run with MAF connected

Helping a friend with a LS3 Connect and Cruise Gen IV in a 1965 GTO
Engine will start and stall in about 2 seconds.
If you unplug the MAF it will start and idle fine.
Have tried 2 different MAF sensors, last one is a Delphi.
MAF is 10 inches from throttle body according to GM instructions.
Using Spectre induction with 4 inch tubing.
GM said Spectre filter was creating vortex of air so install air straightener which we did with no change.
GM said use GM filter which we did, no change.
Can someone point me in a direction to figure out what is causing this rather than throwing parts at It?
thanks
Marshall

intake with air straightener installed

With the MAF connected, use a good scanner to read what the MAF frequency is when you start and it runs for a few seconds. Also check if it set any codes.
If the MAF frequency is too low, like 1000 Hz, it would lean the engine to a stall. If too high, like 10,000 Hz, it might flood the engine to a stall. Often if the MAF frequency's corresponding load is way different than calculated from the MAP and TPS, the ECU will set a code; I would expect it to actually ignore the MAF then.

Is that MAF pointed the right way?

This is the mounting instructions that GM included in the kit.

I installed an LS7 MAF backwards once on a C6Z and it did this same thing. I pulled it out, flipped it over, and it ran fine. I honestly didn’t know it mattered at the time of install. Just a thought…

My MAF sensor is mounted on the drivers side just like yours and the locking tab is on the bottom. I think your sensor is mounted backwards. Bob

There's an arrow on usually both pieces to indicate flow direction.

Not with mine. I had to dig around a bit - ended up pulling out the MAF on my LS3 to look at it.

Note the open edge and extraction port here:

It'd be nice to hear if the MAF install orientation was the issue. Where is the OP?

If this picture is correct, it's backwards.
