I just found my dream truck, it is a 02 single cab short bed 4.8 5 speed. I either want to take the 4.8 out and re gasket/bearing, cam, springs etc. or should I just go ahead and buy the summit 450hp 5.3 and put in it? Im not going to race it or anything I just want a semi rowdy street truck to cruise around.

Lot's of options...take the original 4.8 and swap to 5.3 rotating assembly (4.8 & 5.3 are tbe same block). Likewise, you can also go with like a stroker rotating assembly. Or just swap the cam.
Swap to a 5.3 (or 6.0 or 6.2). Any stroker combination of either of those. Swap cam on any.
Leave the 4.8 and boost it with a turbo or supercharger.
You should start with establishing a power goal and a budget, and go from there. Will you do the work yourself or pay someone to do it?

I will be doing the work myself, I'll just have to have the tune done later. I'm just basically wanting a good sounding truck with 350 400hp? I know I can do that with the 4.8 fairly easy. I just didn't know if it would be worth to fool with it or just go with the already built 5.3...

OP,
Maybe drive it for a bit? You said it's your dream truck. If it's running and driving then drive it and enjoy it. Focus on things that need repair or replacing first. Work out any bugs or neglected items it's seen in 22 years of being on the road. Then focus on the performance side of things. Learn more about what you want from the truck and budget for that goal.

If you buy a new GM crate engine, it has to be installed at a GM dealer and run a GM ECM …..IIRC
