A timing chain damper is included on the 2004 Gen 3 LS6 and Gen 4 engines. Prior to this the drilling and taping of the damper attachment holes has been sporadic on the Gen 3 block to permit the use a bolt-on chain damper. Two different bolt spacing chain dampers are also available. The early wide bolt pattern damper can be identified by its beige color while the newer narrow bolt pattern damper is black in color. When installing a chain damper on an engine that did not originally have a damper installed, check for the proper damper version of bolt spacing required and procure the correct damper and, if needed, block machining

A person on LS1GTO just posted pictures of his LS1 GTO mostly disassembled and it did not have the dampner that I recall seeing. You might go over there and look at his pictures just to be sure.

It also has the holes for a dampner

So whats the deal on the black dampner, can't you drill an early block to use it or
do you need the high buck tan one? Also I received my timeing chain and it has one dark side plate on it while all the others are light gray.Did I get a defect that did not
get shot peened or something,or are they all this way? I'd like to know if someone can look at their chain and see if all the side plates are the same color.I'd sure hate to use a defecive chain.
