Can I get a LS2 timing chain set anywhere besides the dealership?

So the #88958608 chain is $28 ? I paid ~$75 after discount from a well known dealer.

I put one on 3 months ago and it fits on stock gears. Much more robust than LS6 see below:

The timing chain part number is 12586482 and previously this chain had only been used on the 6.0L in the 2004 Cadillac and Chevrolet pick-ups. The crank sprocket is part number 12556582 and it is basically unchanged from the LS1; it was used in 98-02 F-body and 97-04 Y-body. Knowing that the crank gears are the same for both applications, one could assume that the timing chains are interchangeable. The original chain for the LS6 is part number 12552954. In September of this year, GM made a part number change on the LS6 chain to the new LS2 chain; 12552954 was changed to 12586482. The new LS2 chain has a significantly different link that has an increased thickness over the old style link found on the LS1 and LS6. Incidentally, the LS1 and LS6 used the same chain.

The only difference between these two engines when it comes to the timing components is the cam gear. The LS2 cam gear is specifically made for the cam position sensor, without this gear the sensor can not locate the cam!

Therefore it would be highly unlikely that any production built LS6 ever came with the new HD LS2 timing chain, but if you need to replace the chain on your LS1 or LS6 it will be replaced with the new HD LS2, part number 12586482.

My question in all of this is this. Will the LS2 cam sensor integrate and operate with the LS1 PCM. It was a question that I was going to ask you before we got of the phone the other day.

Yes Andrew, we as in SDPC confirmed that a few days ago. The LS2 cam sensor will work with a LS1/LS6 PCM.

Yes.
I have been running the LS2 chain without sprocket change for 3 months.

More imprtant the T1 race cars have switched to this chain cause they were busting LS1/6 chains at high revs..

You can also fit the GM performance dampener for added safety.

I did a search for part number 12586482 on your website and it didn't come up with anything. Is it listed or would I have to call to order?

KJ - I run the LS1 dampener as well, but I heard there is a LS1 unit (light brown) and a LS2 (black) that serve the same purpose with a difference in price.

Also, I run the GMPP heavy duty LS1/LS6 chain.. is this the same as the LS2 chain?

The light brown dampener was originally developed by GM Racing about two years ago. The Corevtte race teams were experiencing some chain problems and this was part of the solution. Obviously, the other part was the upgraded chain. The LS2 engine was enhanced with these upgrades that came from the racing group. Funny thing, the GM factory-production people used a different bolt pattern on the OEM black dampener! So the dampeners serve the same purpose but they are NOT interchangable!

So this chain might be considered a nice upgrade to do to an '04 GTO during a head/cam swap correct?
