Biggest advantage is not having to have a deep oil pan which means you can locate the engine lower in the chassis for a lower center of gravity which means better handling.

Doesn't the trans hang as low as the oilpan?

I would assume the very few street car applications using any kind of dry sump system would be manual clutch type or sequential type transmissions that don't have an oil pan like an automatic. Manual transmissions provide a bit more clearance than the conventional automatic.

If the motor in the new Z06 is mounted lower than in the C6, this may be one reason it will only be available with a manual transmission. (That and they probably can't make an automatic stong enough to handle 500hp and make it cost effective.)

By using a drysump you are not limited to 5 or 6 quarts of oil, you can put in any capacity oil reservoir you want. The more oil volume you have the lower your oil temperature will stay.

Isn't it also safer in high cornering applications?

The trans is in the rear of the car on C5/C6's, not mounted directly to the motor.

True, but wouldn't they hang just as low based on the input shaft, i.e. torque tube, being level with the ground?

This is all just random speculation of course, as I've not even seen if the engine is lower in the new z06....but if it was, I'm sure they could angle the torque tube so it was on a slight incline using a slightly angled bellhousing or something to that effect. Only talking 1-2 degrees. Anyway, on my C5 the tranny/rear already seems like its up higher than the oil pan by a few inches. <shrug>

I expect the only real reason they are running the dry sump oiling system is to solve oil starvation problems. All the others are potential bonuses, though.

The C5 had oil starvation problems which is why the "batwing" oilpan was developed.

The C6 doesn't use the batwing pan, but GM Powertrain have done some serious work to the new oilpan to make it work within the handling limits of the C6. The Z06 C6 should push the handling limits even higher, making the oil starvation problems even worse.

GM doesn't seem to do much of anything if they can find an easier and cheaper way to do it just as effectively. My bet is engineering / R & D just couldn't make it happen with a wet sump. Not that a dry sump is a bad thing, mind you. But certainly more complicated and expensive.

Just my thoughts.
