Do I need a LS2 rear cover as well for the LS2 block?
As many of you already know, I'm swapping over to a LS2 in my 2000 Camaro SS and was wondering if the rear cover has to be changed out as well? I'm trying to get everything gathered up for the build. So far, this is what I've come up with as far as what's needed for the LS2 block:
Timing cover (front cover)
Timing chain
Cam sensor
Valley cover
Lifter trays
If there's anything else that I'm lacking, please let me know. Thanks.

The stock LS1 rear cover works fine but you need a new gasket and seal. Tip: Oil pan to rear cover alignment is critical to prevent leaks. I used the GM manual and LS1 specific tools to align them. But other use the transmission bellhousing as a guide which seems to work.

You might double check me on this but I think the LS2 block uses a different bolt to hold the rear cover on. I believe it's the same one as used in the side of the main caps. GM part # 125596127. The LS1/LS6 blocks use #11515758. I have them in stock if you need them.

If you go to an LS2 block these are the LS2 parts you will need. The remaining LS1 parts work.

Timing chain and gear
Timing chain dampener
Cam sensor and electrical connector
Tap block for LS1 knock sensors
Plug PCV outlets on rear of each valve cover(2)
Run PCV lines per LS6
LS2 head bolts
Lifter retainers
Valley cover

Timing chain dampener
Cam sensor and electrical connector
Tap block for LS1 knock sensors

It's the plastic piece. One cause of chains breaking is that they can "whip" around under certain conditions. The dampener is supposed to help avoid that. Some LS1 blocks had the holes but if not they can be drilled and tapped. I believe the bosses are there. LS2 blocks come with dampeners.

The dampener is bolted directly to the block and fits perfectly between the camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket. If you saw a picture (try the search button here) it would make total sense. All LS2 blocks have threaded holes for the dampener in the block from the factory.
