Default LS1/6 Vs LS2

What exactly are the differences between the LS1/6 engines and the LS2? Is the LS2 really a complete redesign like the LT1s and LS1s were? Just curious.

I believe the LS2/LS7 and LS1/6 all have the same external dimensions. The LS2/7 have wider bores than the 1/6. I don't think it's near as drastic a change as the LT1-LS1.

Basically the LS1/6 are 346 (3.899" bore x 3.622" stroke), the LS2 is the same as the LQ4/9 6.0L 364 (4.000" bore x 3.622" stroke) from the truck, except with an aluminum block. The LS7 is based of off the 427 C5R 7.0L (can't recall bore and stroke) and shares very little with the LS1/6 and LS2. The LS2 and LS1/6 can share many components.

This is a very basic run down of the differences.

Wasn't there someone on here that looked at LS2 and LS7 stripped blocks and said they had very few differences?

Yeah, I thought I read here (or somewhere) that the LS7 was just a very bored out LS2.

So basically, the "Gen IV" designation is really not completely accurate then? Because the Gen II (LT1) was very different from the Gen I, and the Gen III (LS1) was a complete redesign from the Gen II. If the LS1/6 and LS2 share a lot of the same parts, why does GM consider it a completely new generation of engine design?

Internals have a lot of differences, different displacement.

We had a Hot Rod article about the LS2 differences about a year ago, but I think you're thinking of the Darton sleeve thread from a few weeks ago.
