Who is the authority on custom cams ... ?
.
I'm looking to get a custom cam ground for my 402 LS2.
It's going to have ETP's - LS7 based heads, for a 4.00" bore.
Since these heads are far from an average head, I would like to have a custom cam ground for the motor, instead of using an off the shelf cam.
I'm looking for your opinions on what shop would make the best custom cam?
(I know this will be opinionated, but I really am just looking for a place to start my search).

Does anyone really custom grind cams or do we just call a cam grinder and have the specs ground? We don't use custom lobes, they are all shelf lobes ground to our specs. I guess to find out the cam specs we would need to know....
1) Cylinder head flow numbers
2) Fuel
3) Compression ratio
4) Where you want to shift the car
5) Gears
6) Tranny
7) Intake
8) Exhaust choice
9) Goals for ET and MPH
And there is no "best" cam...

Right. And I would assume ANYONE who was grinding a cam would have to be supplied with that info. Obviously you would give them the head flow specs, CR, where you want the redline to be, what gears you plan on running, Tranny is a no brainer, and intake/exhaust would be involved as well. I would have thought that would be standard info when designing a cam, not a huge amount of unobtainable information as you present it as being?
As for the "best" cam comment - of course there is a "best." The "best" cam would be the cam that best fits the customer's specifications of power, drivability, idle characteristics, etc. Obviously, the definition of Best would be based on personal opinion, which is why I said "this will be opinionated."
All my question was asking is Give Me a Starting point in my search ... suggestions as to what shops would be the best to speak to for designing a cam for my 402. I'm not asking the board members to design one for me, I will leave that to the pro's.

Hey I am with ya. Not sure why you think I implied the information was unobtainable.. When we did the cams for the ET 225 hyd roller and 240 solid roller, we used our cam software and 3 grinders and they all basically said the same thing withing a couple of degrees. I think we initally came up with a 252/254 - 260 and the 3 "Pro" grinders said 250/260 254/260 and 248/256. Good Luck
Why don't you just call ET Performance? They offer custom spec'd cams for their heads.

I plan on calling ETP, but I want at least 4-5 places to call, get some suggestions, etc. I went through 3 cams on my LS1, and this is now my second setup on the LS2 ... I'm honestly getting tired of changing it, so I want to get this one right. lol.

You might want to give Rick a call at Synergy motorsports. He is very good at cam selection and has a local guy that will grind to his specs. I have seen him talk with people about there cam and he will go threw all there driving habits and make sure they get a good cam not just some big number dyno queen cam.
