Default ported LS2 intake questions

i cross posted this in the LS1/LS6 external engine mods section but someone there suggested i post here also.

ok ive done research on this and from what i read a stock ls2 intake sucks. but ive seen it mentioned several places here as well as on another board that a ported one flows as good or better than a ported fast. it was said that a sponsor posted that but i cant find any information to back that up at

also what exactly IS the restriction? some say its from being produced that pieces dont line up. any pics that i can see to show this?

any help would be great.

They are pretty much the same thing as an LS6 but with a 90mm throttle body opening.
I'm pretty sure they flow pretty good and about the same as an LS6.

I've been reading the LS6 was actually an "upgrade" over the LS2. I'm not sure if they were talking about stock-stock or all together. I saw a thread on it a while back.

I've got a ported LS2 intake in testing right now... should have results very soon.

In stock form the LS2 does appear to trail the LS6 in flow. In ported form I'm not convinced. The ported LS2 should kick the LS6's ***. I'll post what I find out.

I had one and found the sections poorly heat welded together and thin walled. Unlike the FAST there is not much that can be done IMHO.

I am eagerly waiting for your results as I have been kicking around this idea for a while myself.

I have a ported LS2 on my car, but I haven't hit the dyno yet. I hope to within the next two weeks.

When I measured the port dimensions before and after porting, they were over 10% larger than stock after. Not exactly an insignificant change, but I guess the dyno will tell the real story.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but does anyone have any results from the ported LS2 intakes? I would be interested to know if there were any noticeable gains over LS6 manifolds. Also, how much are you all paying to have LS2 intakes ported?

There’s been a lot of speculation on the Internet that swapping the LS2’s intake manifold with its large 90mm throttle-body might be a hot-ticket setup for older LS1s. Testing that theory, we back-to-back tested the LS2 manifold to an ’04 LS6 manifold with its smaller 76mm throttle-body, which is also Drive by Wire. The result: the LS6 design outdistanced the newer LS2 by 8 hp and a huge 16 lb-ft of torque. All the LS1 guys out there scrambling to buy LS2 intakes from dealers might want to reconsider, but if you have a new Corvette, maybe you can trade your intake to someone with an LS6 manifold before he reads this.

I believe the larger port volume of the intake just isn't needed on the smaller motors. Some have been having good luck on bigger motors that can actually use the bigger runners, but deffinatlly not worth it on a stock bottom end.

I'm sure you guys have seen this article:

TPiS article

This seems to show that the LS2 has "some" potential. It seems like you could port one of these and have a decent 90mm manifold. According to the tests in this article the LS2 has a higher and sooner peak than the LS6. Any more thoughts. I may have to give one of these ported LS2's a try.

I am a recovered early adopter from Spring 05 and I am not going back. That intake just does not work and it is so cheesy there is not much that can be done with it. I think GM put the "new guy" on designing that one.

I had my intake ported, I had very nice gains along the entire curve in both HP and Torque. Average was 5-14, peak was 7.5

PM CHarris for more info.

Z06 Dave,
Those are nice gains. I wish you had an LS6 intake dyno to compare those numbers with. What size injectors are you running?
Josh

I am running the stock injectors, send CHarris a PM, I know he was thinking about LS6's, he may have done a couple, he might have numbers to compare.

I do have a ported LS6 in the works... but on a stock engine it absolutely requires tuning ability. I've shown a loss on the dyno... because I gained 4-6 degrees of knock. I believe when tuned the ported LS6 will shine... but it may not be the ticket for a stock cubed engine. My first test is on a CTS-V with a CAI only. I need to get it tuned and revisit the dyno. If the gains are decent on the stock application, I'll test further on my Corvette LSX swap (6.0, ARE heads, 232/238 cam, etc). I want results before I move any of these out there.

The ported LS2, on the other hand, is doing nicely already. It kind of irks me that the LS2 intake has such bad press when it is always tested in stock form. One look at the smooth ports of the LS6 vs the many edges inside the LS2 explains a lot. A ported LS2 is a different animal in my opinion and I think it was written off early because it requires a bit of work and the LS6 or FAST will drop right on the LS1/6's. Why would a shop invest in working on ported ones when they can just sell what they know works. No R&D time or expenses required.

While I can't speak for other porters work, I know that my own version is very different from stock. I also like that we've got hot gain Dyno numbers on Dave's (Z06-Dave) intake. With a 14 minute interval between stock vs ported its darn good proof of gains. My CTS-V with stock thermostat loses 10 hp per run (at 5 minute intervals) if no cooldown is given.

I had my intake ported on my C6 Corvette. It gained 15/rwhp and 15/rwtq.
