Default LS2 intake material

I have a question that I've gotten mixed answers from on another forum...

What is the composition of the LS2 manifold? What material is it made of?

I've got one on the bench that I am working heavily and I need to obtain some flat sheet material that is the same or very similar to the factory intake material. Can anyone help with some information?

Previous people have said its nylon 66 material, but it seems more "plastic" than the LS6 or LS1 intakes. In fact the LS2 looks alot like the new L76 material.

Thanks for any info!

Look for recycle markings on it somewehere. There should be a 3 or 4 letter code on it that tells what kind of material it is.

Hmmm... I only found an alpha-numeric... not all letters. Could that be right?

It's made of Nylon 66 by DuPont.

Is uit PA66? I think that is the code for nylon 66.

Geoff,

All I can find are these "codes" on it:

060A
333
>PA-6_GF30<
129

Nothing else is present as far as I can see. Do any of those make sense? Maybe it is Nylon 66 but molded differently so the finish, surface texture, and appearance are different?

I have a L76 and Ls2 intake and they are not made from the same thing. The l76 looks like nylon and the LS2 is more like ABS but I haven't the slightest idea what the plastic is. The is L76 is far superior in build quality. I will have to post the pictures of my LS2 intake when I get a chance, the cast line up and flash was terrible.

PA-6 is the material, a grade of Nylon. GF30 means that it is 30% glass filled. It is a pretty common material. If you know someone in the automotive plastics business, they can probably get you plaques of this material that they use for testing.

We know that the LS1/LS6 intakes are made of that but the LS2 (and the LS7) intake just seems/feels a little different than those.

Pretty sure they are all made of the same material, but utilizing different production techniques. My LS1 and LS7 intakes "feel" the same.

The exterior finish on the intake doesn't mean anything. They put graining on the tool once it is complete that gives it it's texture. If they didn't grain it, it would actually be shiny. They are all molded pretty much the same way.

They might actually have swithed from nyon 66 to nyon 6 as a cost savings or something. The only way to tell is read the material callout like CHarris did.

By "feel", I meant the material looks, smells, feels, sounds the same between the LS1 and LS7 intakes.

Thanks guys! This is invaluable information.

I'm working on a big project that might make quite a few LS2 owners happy and might even convert a few LS6 intake owners over to the LS2... well MY LS2.

I'm in the plastics industry, and you are right, the material is Nylon 6, with 30% glass fill - all of the intake manifolds are made of the same material, regardless of how they feel to you. I looked around to see if I have some plaques, but its not a material I commonly work with so I don't think I have any.

PA = polyamide = nylon

ABS is too brittle for intake manifolds, and won't take the heat.
