Default 6.0 shortblock

hey guys I have been wondering about this set up. Can a stock 6.0 Iron block work with the l92 heads and intake? If so what kind of power would this put down with a mild cam? I tried to find a similar post but couldent.
Thanks
Ronnie

if the pistons are flat top's then it would probably be similar to the test that gmpp or who ever did with a ls2 shortblock, l92 heads, l76 manifold, and 232/238 cam.

Note you will end up with something very very similar to the Aluminum block L76 (but without the displacement on demand stuff).

It would mainly depend on if the heads were ported, the compression, cam sized, and how well it was tuned to see what kind of rear wheel power could be produced.

HI: I was thinking about this myself a real low budget motor for the guys on a tight budget. The LQ4 motors are more common than the LQ9 motors in the junkyard. I figure the compression would be around 9.7 with an LQ4 and about 10.5 with the LQ9. Maybe someone will try it. Get a used motor and swap out the heads and intake and try some different cams.

I've read that people on the board with Stock LQ4 bottom ends with LS6 heads are making around 400+ hp. The better flowing L92 should be that good or better. Plus the L92 can be had for around the same price. Add some N2O and that would be a bad ****!

I'm not exactly an expert but I got common sense and I would figure if you did a 6L either alumnum or iron as long as the combo is the same you should get the same numbers the only difference is that the iron block will obviously be heavier and the heat expansion will be different but I can't imagine it would make too much of a diference. I could be wrong it wouldn't be the first time but I doubt it.

the biggest difference should be the heads. L92 heads are suppose to out flow AFR's hands down. I dont know if you would pick any horse power up form the block. Also the Intake would flow better! I was just wondering if anyone has done this yet.

We flowed my stock L92 heads out of the box on a 4.0 bore. along with a set of AFR 225's. My L92's flowed @ .600 was 315- the AFR's flowed @ .600 was 316.

I got a 06 gto with the ls2 in it . I want to put the l92 heads on it but I want to have them milled to bring the comp to 11 to 1 . My question is what kind of cam could I clear without notching the pistons?

Ryan1785: What are the rest of the flow numbers, from .1 to .6?

Thanks.

The iron block is going to be the cornerstone for my "Cheap Bastard" buildup. Should be around $3000 for the entire longblock + machinework and assembly.

Default Another Cheap Bastard 6.0l

The engine in my truck is based on a 22k used LQ4 that I purchased for $1500 and the rest of the parts were either used or repaired warranty stuff. Until I bought the headers and tune, I had about $3100 in the entire swap (the grand total is about $4150). I also had a lot of time searching for parts on the internet (eBay, LS1Tech, etc.) and this is where a lot of the savings were encountered.

My new parts total was around $894, and the machine work to the heads was $275, and the rest was for the used stuff.

The LQ4 downfall is compression and connecting rods. I just had the heads milled .035, used .041 FelPro gaskets and installed ARP bolts in the rods.

It uses no oil, has 45psi hot idle, 60 psi cruise and 65 psi hot and winding oil pressure.

It runs really strong, but still needs an intake and probably needs a larger tb to breathe properly.

Given the cost of the (warranty) LS6 heads and machine work, today I could have done an L76/L92 manifold/ead combo for just a few bucks more.

I am trying to do this buildup as cheap as possible:

402 Rotating Assembly - $1485 shipped from SDPC (it was on special)
L92 Heads - $840 shipped from SDPC
6.0 Iron Block Core - $300 locally for blown long block (with plenty of parts to sell)
L76 bare intake - ~$250 (don't have yet)
Throttle Body - ~$400 (don't have yet)
Cam - $150-$500 - This is a big unknown right now

Things I already have on hand are - my stock ls1, 40 lb injectors, fuel rail, and 918's. I get the machine work and assembly done by a local guy who has a full shop in his three stall garage (he has built motors for me before). The cam is the big questions. I was going to just go with a stock LS7 (<$200 used) but I may end up ponying up for a bigger stick and the springs to go with it.

I know there are a bunch of stuff I am missing - oil pump, timing chain, head bolts, etc, but I am looking to get it in and running for under $5000 with the tune. Thus the official "Cheap Bastard" moniker. Considering just eight months ago I was looking at $2200 heads with a $1300 intake, I think this is a big improvement in the wallet department.

I have a 6.0 L Truck engine intake heads and block with ~80k miles on it for $1000 if you want it. It is in Algonquin, IL.

BTW, there is a build up article in Car Craft for this.

Now flow your sale receipts side by side. No **** though, I bet the story would be different if flowed the two sets on a "big" bore.

Has anyone used stock 6.0L rods and pistons making 500-550 horsepower? are the parts still reliable with this much power?
