According to MSD the spark duration is adjustable to a bit longer than the stock coils for a smoother idle. Maybe a cleaner burn too?

MSD's are a waste of $$. Stock coils easilly handle 1000hp.

I have heard a lot of stories of people having problems with the MSD coils, although I have never had a set personally.

Guys that are making big power use the truck coils...they seem to be fine over the 1000hp mark!

Hi

I had the MSD coils on my LS1. 4 coils out of the 8 failed. Very slow degradation on performance, but no SES codes for a long time. Eventually I got speratic random misfire codes. No one could figure out by scanning what was going on. Caused me to fail emission testing twice.

Finaly they failed outright when I was on a trip. Had to tow it into a shop to get it fixed. Fortunatley I had the stock coils in the trunk, but it still cost me a pile of money.

4 ot of 8 is 50%. That is pure ****. I sent them back to MSD under warrantee and they tested and found 3 dead and 1 low on output. I am not willing to put them back on the car. I can't sell them to anyone. In fact, I do not think I could give them away. The general opinion is that they are too unreliable to use. Lots of people are still having failures with them. Waist of $600.00 bucks. MSD should never of put this product to market.

Buy the way, on another matter, I had a new set on MSD LS1 superconductor wires and 2 wires failed within about 4 months with high resistance.

Thanks JA

I went thru 6 MSD boxes with the 383 ignition, yes SIX! Mounted the box on the rad support in front of the radiator. Finally determined that they were getting wet from washing the car-despite being careful not to get them wet. After a rewire and the last , fifth box, went with a off road, marine box. No problems so far but have decided that they are VERY FRAGILE. Was told all kinds of stories why they failed. Apparently a new company has bought MSD and they are no longer getting their boxes from Malasia, however all the big suppliers purchased all the old boxes that frequently failed at a discount prior to this change. Really no way to tell, sooooo good luck!

I can't speak to the new ls series coils and/or wires but,

i have used 6al's on 3 different stangs that have been in my fleet.
never had any trouble with any of them. the 1st one had over 100k on it when i sold the car.

i do agree they should not get wet if possible. that was not a problem where it was mounted in my stangs..

I was soon to replace my wires with msd's but this is making me rethink it. What wires are you guys using? I don't think ngk makes wires for our engines do they?

Hi

NGK make a wire set. I am using one now, with good results.

51054
RC-GMX090

They are an OE style wire with the metal boot/protector. However, they are low resistance and high temp silicone. You might also try Taylor wires. They are very good.

Thanks JA
