Oil in the intake. Need help. I put a brand new l ls2 into my 98 camaro and right now it's got about 4000 miles on it and still smokes when I start it up. I understand that moderate oil consumption is to be expected but the problem is that when I looked inside the intake manifold there is a ton of oil pooled in there and the spark plugs have oil on them. What could be happening? Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like your pcv valve might be stuck closed.If your pcv valve is stuck it can cause pressure to build up in the crankcase and cause the engine to run rough,leak oil past gaskets,and possibly make its way up to the intake where the pcv hoses are.

Would a stuck pvc valve cause that much of a problem? Theres a lot of standing oil in the intake, looks like someone poured oil over everything. Is there anyway of checking if the pcv valve might be stuck?

You can check for a stuck closed pcv valve by shaking it.With the engine off.It should make a rattle,if it doesnt then it is defective.A pcv valve actually operates under vacuum.One other way to test a pcv valve is to cover the end of the pcv valve with your thumb.Engine rpm should drop about 50-80 rpms because the slight vacuum leak that an open pcv valve allows is being closed off.You should also feel a slight suction on your thumb at the end of the pcv valve.I still think you might need the catch can though.Driving hard or racing creates more blow by.Excessive blow by can overwhelm even a properly operating pcv valve which only has a small orifice metered by a plunger.You can try the test procedures I gave you,but I believe that the oil in the intake is from blow by vapors.A lot of LS1 owners have catch cans for that reason.

Ordered the catch can today, but I'm thinking that I would have to emptie the thing every week or so. I'm not sure but don't the LS2's have an internal pvc valve located in the rocker cover? Is there any way to check it without taking the whole thing apart?
