I LOVE rotella oil. As a matter of fact, I just put the first gallon in my new motor about an hour ago.

This is how I do it for the first 150 miles.
1) Fire motor for 10-15 minutes, let oil temps come up and cooling stabalize. Drain oil/filter while its still hot. Replace oil/filter

2) Fire motor w/medium accell and decel. Fluctuate loads for 15-20 minutes. Change oil (Not filter)

3) Do all part throttle tuning. 50-75 miles. Change oil/filter

4) Do all WOT heavy load tuning. 100 miles or so. Change oil and filter.

I dont switch to synthetic for at least 1500-2000 miles.
Of course, this is on a street car. I'm not really sure how racers do it

1 change, 2 changes, etc.?

If the Moroso pan says holds 6 quarts, then figure 1 for the filter (roughly), would I start out with 7 and add from there?

i run a basic cheep oil in my car 30 weight for about 5 min, change oil and filter with cheep oil again run it up good to get things seated and hot and run it for a little bit 5-10 min revving it up and high idle.
then i change to a 20w 50 vr1 after that, and i change it after every track visit

FYI

For all of the 15w40 diesel oil uses the new CJ rated oil mirrors the new SM rated oils.

So if you think your getting a better additive package by running the diesel oils you might want to rethink that one

So are you saying not to use the diesel oil for break in?

I am just saying that if you are buying the currend diesel oil thinking that you are getting a better anti wear add pack then you should look at the new diesel oil specs.

At one time you would have been getting a better oil but not now.

Any oil that meets the current API engine service classification has less anti wear additives and should be avoided.

When you say anti wear.....are you refering to ZDDP??

Here is what I have learned by calling SDPC (my 416 shortblock) and Valvoline tech support:

According to SDPC who built my engine the first 5K miles are with non-synthetic containing ZDDP and then for the rest of the engines life synthetic but it also must contain ZDDP.

Rotella and Valvoline Racing oil are OK for the first 5K

There are two Valvolines. The NFS (not for street) and VR1. Both have the proper levels of ZDDP. I called Valvoline and asked what the difference was and why the NFS was $10/Qt. while the VR1 was less than $5/Qt. Answer NFS is good only for 500 miles and made in limited quantities. Also said as did SDPC that the VR1 was good for breakin.

Valvoline also has a synthetic racing oil with ZDDP when its time to go synthetic.

SDPC recommends either Rotella 15/40 or Valvoline 10/30. Valvoline also comes in 15/20

Is anybody using 10/30?? Seems like 20/50 would be safer?????

I run the Rotella 15/40, used it on break in.This is a good oil to use for any of these motors and I highly recommend it.Traver
