I figured LS2 and LS1 lifter retainers would be the same. I found out today they have different part #s. Anyone know what is different about them?

 

They are different... Not sure of the exact differences as I havent compared them side to side. I know, we used the Gen4 lifter retainers in a 402 we did in a buddy's car. I have a set of the Gen3 ones now sitting here as I'm building a gen3 myself..

 

Ls2 trays will work on ls1 blocks but early ls1 trays won't work on ls2,3,7 blocks.Newer lsx blocks have a raised point that the newer trays sit on.Thats the difference.

Hi,
The late lifter guide clears the 5th head bolt boss that was added to the LSX block. Chevy seems to have made this change to all the trays rather than stock two PN's.

I have LS2 lifter trays in my built LS6...

 

FWIW, I was still able to buy the LS1 trays without the notch from GM under the LS1 part number as of 12/06/2007. They came out of the Ft. Worth parts warehouse.
