Beaflag, I'm looking at a new LS1 block right now that has windows in the main webs, so at least the latest production version of 'em has it. It solves a lot of windage issues, I watched an LSX 454 on a dyno and it only picked up 3hp with a vacuum pump pulling 18" of vacuum.
I wouldn't worry about the main caps, either. Just because it has less metal doesn't necessarily mean it's weaker. All H-beam rods have more material removed than left on one axis and they can handle a lot of power. The cross bolts are more about making the entire bottom end act as one piece rather than solely providing support for the mains.
I'd give the GM engineers credit for testing the design rather than simply thinking it was a good idea and putting it into production. I know they've had problems with rod bolts and a few other issues, but the basic design is sound, IMHO.
Ford went to the supercharger because their engine couldn't make the grade N/A. GM's stuff is badass without the huffer, that's just icing on the cake. Neither Ford nor Dodge makes anything with this kind of potential. For that matter, I don't know than anyone else does, either. The Italian sports cars make hp but they're high strung small engines that make their power in the higher rpm range - their lack of torque is why they can't hang in the 1/4 mile.
GM has done a good job of raising the bar with every redesign of the LS engine family. As much of an old-school big block guy as I am, it's impossible not to recognize the technology at work in the complete LS engine.

the ford guys had to resort to a blower with the cobras, the 2v mod motors
are nowhere in the same league as a ls1, with this new ls9 motor, the ford boys will have their memories of when the cobra motor was superior to the ls motors, at least in their minds

2 Questions:

What's the hp limit on their 2.3 liter Eaton? (I've already heard rumours of blower upgrades that are going to be avialable!)

and

I wonder how much a crate LS9 will be?

Forged pistons, piston squirters, Ti rods, dry sump, and a beefier block. This block would be great for a custom build.
that ought to be a nasty bitch when finished and in production cars.
