ls1 to ls2 swap

Ok Im tossing my hat in on this one:
I plan on running a 4.8L Gen III vortec engine swapped into my 4runner. I want to run a LS2 cam (gen IV) in it as they are cheap as hell.
I know that I will definately need a new timing cover/sensor assembly (325 as previously mentioned) as well as a LS2 timing chain/gear set.
IF I am understanding this correctly, there are TWO different LS2 timing/gear sets? The earlier set will reproduce an LS1 signal and the later will not?
IF I use the earlier gear/timing set (circa 2005) will I still need a 24 reluctor wheel on the crank and the associated sensor, or would that change only be needed for the newer LS2 gearsets?

OK!!
courtesy of LS2.com I dug up some VERY revealing info!![Grin](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_grin.gif)

Gen III engines have a 24x reluctor wheel built in as well as the 2005 LS2, thus a 2005 LS2 cam gear can be used with a LS2 timing cover and sensor. After 2005, say hello to the 58x reluctor and the new timing gear. The big question is, will the newer sensor/timing cover (325) work with the older 2005 LS2 cam gear, or must it be the 2005 circa sensor?

Leave the 4.8L Gen III vortec crankshaft alone, it already has 24x reluctor wheel.
Only use an LS2 stock GM cam from 2005, it will have 3 bolt holes for the cam gear to bolt to.
Use 2005 LS2 cam gear Part No 12576407, 3 bolt holes, 1 timing lump.
Yes, the newer sensor/timing cover (325) will work with the older 2005 LS2 cam gear.

Ok im confused... GM performance parts, and lingenfelter sell the cover # 12600326 as a ls2 timing cover. This is not the part number that you guys state in previous posts. Is this an even newer superceded part number. I bought the 24x cam gear, and am wondering if this cover will work now as this is the one in my posession.

The engine is complete. I figure I can sell the Batwing oil pan and LS2 intake and recoupe some of my money.
Even stock using a LS6 intake and 1 7/8 headers it will make more than an LS1 w/ a cam.
I already have the LS2 timing set from my LS1 build. I "think" all I need is to relocate the knock sensors and either buy or extend the knock sensor and cam sensor harness myself.
I'm pretty sure I can reuse the timing cover but might have to get a different cam sensor, that part I'm not 100% on.

As far as accessories go everything bolts up fine. You'll need to drill and tap new threads on the sides of the block to fit ls1 knock sensors and run a knock sensor extension harness and run a cam extension harness to reach the cam sensor on the front ls2 cover. You may have to run a convertor box for the crank if it has the 58x reluctor. Hope this helps.
