Default 8MM Rocker Arm Bolts

I know the torque is 22ftlb's, should I use assembly lube on the thread's for a better torque reading or do people put them in dry and torque them?
Thanks

I use plain engine oil, and on the intake bolts, use a permatex high performance PTFE sealant, as the threads go all the way into the port.

The GM manual doesn't call for assembly lube. The 22 lb-ft is therefore likely derived from dry friction. Adding a lubricant, to get the same bolt pre-load, requires an adjustment to the torque value.

Why? Or better yet, why doesn't the OEM use Loctite for the same install?

i think the locktight is used as a thread sealer for the bolts on the intake

Thanks for the comments. I called GM Powertrain Tech Service this morning. They told me just plain oil as was mentioned earlyer, and then the 22 ft lbs. I took there advice. I guess a little (very little) Loctite wouldn't hurt if you had a full on drag car, but mine's not. I'll try that first. If they loosen up, I'll try some Loctite.

I've never used Loctite on rocker bolts. It's completely unnecessary. However, I do use a thread sealer on the intake rocker bolt. If you feel better using Loctite, by all means, do it.

Wow! I wish I had used something on my rocker bolts. Then maybe my motor would pull past 7600!

Blue Loctite is only good to 7000. Red is good to 8000.

with ported heads it is necessary to seal the threads to prevent intake leak

Intake only though. It also helps to use shorter bolts if they screw into the intake port.

Or longer if you need to shim the rockers to get a good wipe pattern and start losing thread engagement.

I never put a drop of anything on my stock rocker bolts, worked perfect. If you want to use sealer, do so only if you've got ported heads and on the intake rockers only. It's a good idea to torque them down, turn the motor over 180*, and re-torque. If the valve is open, it's adding force upward on the bolts, which can a false torque reading on the bolt. Make sure you use a 6-pt 8mm socket too.

If you put red loctite on them, you're insane. If you've used it until now with no problems, you should buy lottery tickets.
