Default Crankshaft plug in Eagle crank

I had to replace the plug in the back of my Eagle stroker crank this weekend after about 3,000 miles since the crank was new from Eagle. It didn't leak until recently, and it wasn't a big leak. But it was definitely leaking, and replacing the plug with a new one from GM seems to have sealed it up, at least for now. I used Permatex #2 to seal the new plug, even though it looked like the original plug was put in dry. There were no score marks or anything in the plug hole - it looked really smooth and nice. The old plug seemed to be in place properly and showed no sign of where it was leaking. The new plug seems to have sealed tightly and had the resistance you would expect when driving a plug into place.

So I'm left wondering what happened here. Is this a common problem? I'm not running super-high oil pressure or anything like that. I'm a little concerned that this might happen again.

Thanks for sharing any experience you might have with this kind of a problem.

I saw a couple of problems like that a few years back with Lunati 383 cranks.
I sealed them with Permatex as well when installing the new plug, never any problems after that.

good luck

Ryan

A number of us had that issue with Eagle Cranks. Mine did it a couple years ago. I called Eagle, they sent me a new plug. Still had to get the clutch redone though.

I called Eagle yesterday. When I asked the guy if this was a known problem, he didn't answer me directly. He said they have fixed only "a few" out of literally thousands sold. But I figure most people wouldn't remove the crank and send it to Eagle for repair. Most people would just pull the tranny and fix it in-vehicle. So of course they would only have fixed a few. He said when they fix them they just put in a new plug (sealed with Loctite) and pressure test.

hmm... makes me happy I went with callies for my crank. My engine was having oil pressure issues (hit 135 psi) on the dyno yesterday and I didn't have a leak.

There isn't any pressured oil behind that plug so that won't be the reason it leaks, if it ever does. That is a lot of oil pressure you're engine had though!
