Yes, pump in the valley. The oil passages that previously allowed oil to drain into crankcase have been eliminated to reduce windage, so the valley pump is required to get oil from the top of the engine back to pan, or I guess the tank rather.

Check that timing chain. Without the tensioner, there would be some SERIOUS slack in it.

Looks like a swap friendly oilpan

The more I learn about this engine, the more I like it. That oil drainback problem has been an Achilles heel for the LS.

The ENTIRE oiling system for the LS is the Achilles heel. This is a huge step in the right direction, with dry sump and multiple scavenges. Cam swaps will be more involved, but that’s ok.

It does work well in stock form for a daily or mild build, but I feel the sbc had a better setup, concerning the priority main oiling. I don’t like the oil pump driven from back of cam, off of dizzy, but the direction of flow is superior to the Gen3/4 setups. All aftermarket LS blocks copy the sbc priority main setup.

I agree that priority main oiling is best, but even in max effort stock blocks, WITH REFINEMENTS/DETAIL MODS, it still works pretty well. Room for improvement? Always...

I’ll agree with you there. It does work. So hard for me to understand however why GM changed the priority main setup. Any debris of any size at all in the lifters, gets pushed to the bearings with the LS design. It’s always best to come out of the filter to the bearings first, to help eliminate any chances of foreign debris getting to them from elsewhere in the engine, even if the filter isn’t getting 100% of the crap out, due to a bypass.

That is one reason a lot of guys use AM blocks designed with priority main oiling.

A reason why I went Dart block... that pesky SBC oil setup is so terrible you know.
Also, the slack in that chain looks like a lot of the VWs I've worked on. They have a couple of chains and there's one tensioner that looks like that keeping things taut on the larger chain.
