Default Prime a Gen V, L83

What is the best way to prime a gen V, L83---just built? It's not like a LS.
Thanks

Either use some sort pressure primer (look up the "sprayer primer"), or just start cranking it with the plugs out until you build oil pressure - it's not the best way, but it does work.

Thanks! I guess I will drill and tap the block off plate on the oil pan for 1/8 NPT and use a pump to push oil in there.

Any type of pressure system to prime it is great. But when you don't have that option, well then, you have to resort to the cranking. But if it's a fresh build...if the assembler used a very liberal amount of assembly lube on everything then it will not be an issue. There is no real abuse taking place. It's just turning. And if using the starter, it's not even getting over 500rpm. 350 at best. Like advised above, make sure the plugs are out and no fuel or spark getting to it.

Thanks
Yeah, the assembler used plenty of assembly lube. It's still on my fingers

If you leave the spark plugs in, these engines will start even with the fuel pump relay pulled. Ask me how I know...

I primed mine before install. Removed the plug right behind the waterpump drivers side.
Poured a quart of oil in it and put the plug back in. rotated it upright and installed.
(This fills the pump and main galley. )

It started half way through the first crank, and had oil pressure (60 lbs) in like 1 second.
YMMV...

Is that behind the vacuum pump? I know there are 2 holes behind the pump.

No, there is no port on a Gen 5 like the Gen 3/4 blocks. To prime a Gen 5. the only way I know of is to go through the cooler line ports on the pan.

Hmmm, betting you still had spark and there was some residual somthin or other in there that made the boom boom. Also willing to bet it was a sphincter-tighten experience or a WTF moment.

[QUOTE=SAPPER;20451948]No, there is no port on a Gen 5 like the Gen 3/4 blocks. To prime a Gen 5. the only way I know of is to go through the cooler line ports on the pan.

I'm thinking that is the only way also. Like I said above, I can drill and tap the cooler lines cap for 1/8npt and prime from there. I used to have a drill operated pump that I could stick one hose in a gallon of oil and the other end to the engine. Spin the drill, crank over the engine with a ratchet ---done. I can't find the pump ( I have moved a couple of times) so I guess I can use a pump up sprayer. There is a plug right behind the oil pressure sensor on the intake, but it is blocked by the whipple intake. Thanks!!

Nope, just the mechanical pump was able to start drawing fuel from the tank.

This was on a phone company truck, after replacing the cam and lifters due to a failure (THANK YOU, SAPPER, FOR TIPPING ME OFF TO THIS PROBLEM!)
I had already installed the plugs, but didn't want to take them out again just to prime the engine.
So I put the battery charger on it, set to 200 amps, and started cranking it. After about three seconds, it started up. I couldn't believe it, and shut it off, and sure enough, the fuel pump relay WAS pulled out.
I tried it again just for the hell of it, and it started again.

I had an oil filter relocator installed on mine. I poured 1 quart down the passenger side head with the valve cover off getting all the lifters and rockers. I then poured 4 quarts down the normal driver side cap. then I used a funnel and filled the oil filter relocating lines and followed by pouring oil in the filter to fully wet it before installing it. No issues.

I also second having an external source of power when first cranking. if you don't have enough voltage, the injectors will not fire (they are picky). Mine was also rebuilt by myself before swapping into my Lexus.

Default How I primed my L83

I purchased an Oil Filter adapter that was threaded 1/8 NPT. Hooked a pressure sprayer to it and pushed 5 quarts of Mobil 1 in. When I hit the starter the first time it fired immediately but then quit, probably residual fuel from when it was in it's previous home. After a few attempts the fuel got to the high pressure pump and it ran. Runs pretty good but as of yet I don't have a MAF. I'm still building this in a 37 Chev PU.
