new fart hey i'm new to the place. i'm getting an 05 gto in a few months and am wondering which tranny is favorable for the majority of drivers. i'm thinking the LS2 has enough ***** to make as good of use of the spread out gears in the automatic as the close gears in the 6 speed, but i could be wrong.

Hey pal welcome. As for the tranny, the LT1 has enough '*****' to deal with the auto. In fact everything really does back into TPI era. Contrary to popular opinion, automatic 4-spd transmissions are not slow, nor they the devil. They are quite handy for highway runs, and urban driving, etc.. I would do a search for tranny differences, as we actually just had a group of guys pin down a consistent amnount of drivetrain loss from the standard A4 transmission vs the standard M6, and if I recall (big surprise!) it's not nearly as bad overall as alot had thought.
so check out the GTO, and drive both, and see what you like. If you want an auto but are unsatisfied with its 'get up and go', don't forget you can always swap out the rear gears. Alot of thse guys round here will tell you that if you aren't driving an M6, you aren't a 'real man' or something like that, but I would highly advise to drive both transmissions before you buy. On occasion I drive an M6 1981 Corvette around, and it's great, but I can't imagine doing it everyday stoplight to stoplight round here. But hey this is all just my $.02.

The automatic GTO gets about 22 mpg on the highway.
The 6-speed gets about 28 mpg.
If you enjoy 'driving' your cars, get the manual. Much higher fun factor to row thru the gears and be in complete control.
