I would definitely find a buyer, rather than trading your car at a dealership. You almost always get more money that way, and it frees you up to find the f-body you really want, and not just what's on the lot somewhere.
I bought my 98 SS for $11500. It's in perfect condition, and has over $8000 in extras. It had around 68000 miles on the clock when I bought it in January.
Good luck! There are deals out there. Just be patient and you'll find what you want.
And don't worry about a huge hit at the pump, as LS1 cars are capable of 27-30 mpg on the highway. Mine ran a best of 12.4 in the 1/4 and sips a gallon of gas every 26 to 27 miles

You shouldn't have trouble selling it because of the good gas mileage that civic gets. Sell it privately and you should get enough for it to pay it off. Then just take out a loan, put about 5000 down on an fbody and make low payments. You can do it.

yeah dealers will rip you off. a friend of mine said he was at a dealer yesterday and they had a new challenger btw for $41k but he saw a 02 SS camaro for $30,000 which is outrageous
