Default New Transmission...

Well, I pick up the "built" transmission tomorrow morning and some friends are putting it back in on Sunday. I hope and pray I will have my old car back. I upgraded a bunch of $hit so I hope it holds up?... It cost me close to 3K. Thank God for tax returns! I am curious to see how 3.29's are for a final gear as opposed to 2.93's. My Torque Converter also weighs 6 lbs. less too. These 2 alone are probably worth a tenth or two down the 1/4 mile. If anyone has upgraded to the 3.29's; could you post your opinions? Thanks in advance.

It's AWESOME!!!

With tuning it shifts amazing, quick, responsive (for a FWD Auto anyways :p )

Which Converter did you go with? I need a new one.

Better throttle response too I bet? Thanks for the reply. Here is the one I went with, it has a 2800 stall. You have to scroll half way down to see it. No drilling required.... : )

For me better throttle response there for sure, but is not as good because the stock converter that REALLY is laggy/slow/ghetto.

I went with this converter because PATC got a good review from the Trans Am/Z28 guys in this forum. Plus I think it is a cool design. Hey, I'll let you know Monday. I get the car back then sometime.

Thanks Guys. I spoke to the trans builder and he said that out of all the 4T65-E's he has built that the GXP has the best internal pieces he has ever seen. He said mostly everything in it is already hardened. He has never seen that before in all of the 4T65-E's he has built for the 3800 community. Pretty cool if you ask me...

Yup, I think the pump shaft and a bunch of the cogs in there and stuff are already hardened, really nice to see actually

Can't wait to hear how you like that converter!

Jay,

I pick it up after work tomorrow. Thing is I don't get out of work till 6pm est and work an hour away from the shop. I will see how it is from the shop to my house which is like 3 miles. lol... I have Wednesday off though and I will be able to give a much better review. I showed the torque converter to my friend he he thought it was cool. He never saw one that has a plate on it before.

Say good-bye to first gear. Coming from the Comp G world with the 3.29's, once your making around 270 WHP or higher on these 4t65-Es you have no traction in first gear. But man you will love the 2nd and 3rd gear pulls.

I know first gear will be strange at first. I hope and pray this trans. lasts. Sucks because I never abused the old transmission. I upgraded just about everything in the new one. Oh no, here comes the anxiety... lol

Well, here is the first review. Yes, this is just my luck too..... I am not too sure how the car is supposed to act when there is a gear change? I had EVERYTHING re-built in this thing including all new sensors and slolnoids. From first to second it shifts at 3,000 rpm no matter how slow or fast you drive it. When I am on the highway in fourth gear the tach bounces 200 to 400 rpms really fast. Almost like the T. Conv. is locking and unlocking really fast. I am throwing no codes. I am wondering if I have a bad PCM/TCM?... Any ideas guys? A tune maybe? I hope it isn't a bad T.Conv... Thanks in advance.

I hear ya. I was wondering if the PCM needed to learn something? I am at a loss. I soaked 3,500.00 into this thing and now this. I feel stupid...
Oh, and I replaced my VSS reluctor wheel from the factory 30 tooth to the 34 toothed one so my PCM would function the shifts correctly. I was told this is what I would need by ZZP.

I talked to my tranny builder (Cartuning Performance) and he thinks that Reluctor wheel is your problem.

The 65e for the V8 is set up like a RWD (controlled like a RWD) what that means is that the pcm doesn't care about the drive/driven gear ratio of the chain since V8 RWD cars don't have that. So unlike the V6 where you either need a new reluctor wheel or you need to change settings in the PCM, the V8 needs nothing.

In my car we didn't do that, just swapped in the 3.29's.

You probably will have a "incorrect gear ratio" code set, but it hasn't lit up the MIL.

Was the reluctor on the Diff or the input gear? If done on the input gear here is his opinion as to what's happening:

"tcc slip is calculated by looking at engine rpm and input shaft rpm they subract the latter from the former.... and get slip if the 30 tooth is changed to a 34 tooth... it will think that the rpm is higher, and probably see a NEGATIVE slip which will totally confuse the tcm"

I'd guess either a bad selenoid, or more than likely, that reluctor wheel...

I'd call ZZP... cuz for instance, if you had a 24x PCM, you HAVE to run a 24X reluctor on the crank, no way around it... so I would call them... not sure why you would have had to change that reluctor wheel at all...
