Default ISS pictures wanted

I know there are lots of threads about the ISS noises and pops but does anyone actually have a picture of the ISS out of the car by itself? Preferably a 2006 imp. I would like to know a little bit more about it before I try fixing it for a second time. I thought about actually installing a zerk fitting on it once I pull it but I would like to be more prepared. So far, all I have done it the spray from the cabin. Didn't stop it long. Looking for a permanent fix or at least to make it easier to maintain. Thanks in advance.

P.S. I have already seen the pics of it in the car and where to lube. I would like to see it out of the car.

Thanks Buffalo, thats a lot of help. Looks like these already have plenty grease. I bet mine is dry.

Yes 20SS07, I bought mine when the warranty was 36k miles, they changed it right after I bought mine to 100k miles. I have about 50k miles now.

They suck. They're notorious for developing an annoying knocking while steering at low speeds. It's almost a question of when it's going to happen not if. Had mine replaced at 22k.

BuffaloSS,

Is the pic you posted the same part as the one on my 2006 imp? I finally got around to having to correct mine and the part in the cabin doesn't look like the one in the picture. Although I haven't got it out yet, it appears to have a "flat slide" end with a bolt in the center similar to that of cars of the 80's that I've worked on. It definitely doesn't have the clamp end in the cabin as the picture shows. It does in the engine compartment though.

Has anyone pulled their ISS in a 2006 of later imp, I would like to know how you did it if possible. It sure is tight in there...

Just pull it out and pack it with as much grease as you can. I did that to mine using sythetic chassis lube. Some green Castrol stuff. I dont think they put enough grease in the joint at the factory. Mine was causing a forward pulling sensation on the steering column when I stepped on the brake or got on the throttle in a turn, eventually it started to make noise. Lay it all over the splines and put some down the outer shaft and work it in there by moving the both ends of the shaft in and out.

Sorry - couldn't resist!

I need to do that or have it done soon - I have a clunk the first time I turn right after the car sits.

My wife has been complaining about a front end clunk when she drives. It is most noticeable when making a hard [left] turn from a stop i.e. stepping on it to make the turn in traffic. Occasionally she feels it when accelerating from a stop too.

I drove it once to test, and it felt like the car was going to fall apart. Felt like it was right under my feet. Everything feels and sounds fine under all other driving conditions.

Is this the steering shaft or do I have bigger problems?

All replaced within the last 15K miles:
Steering Rack
Control Arms
Tierod Ends
Wheel Bearings

I hope it's not one of those or I'll be pissed at myself.

Believe it, and by the way, it's likely to return after some time so remember how you greased it. It has not been a permanent fix for me. I've done mine 3 times already. When I pulled mine it felt brand new, no play but that knock will stop after you grease it.

Ive always wondered if this is just an annoyance noise or are there cases of actual documented iss failure because of this? I have yet to see info where this nothing more than noise.
