Default Turned DOD off 1000 miles ago

I turned DOD off 1000 miles ago and have enjoyed every second of the improved driveability.

18.1 mpg over the last 1000 miles with less than 100 being on the hwy. That's the same mileage that I was getting with DOD on.

I'm expecting to lose about 2 mpg on the hwy from what I've read but I need to go on a couple of road trips to find out my self. My previous hwy was running 28-30 mpg.

That's pretty good. Have you been babying it or are you driving spiritedly (normal)?

I haven't babied it since I've owned it.

I seem to get better mpg by getting up to speed quicker than getting there slowly.

These are funny cars to drive. I still have the traction control kick in at 40mph+ when I drive at my normal (spirited) pace. I try to give it just enough gas to NOT spin the tires put give a good pull.

Hm... I've been doing the oposite. I'm testing things right now, and I'm trying to keep the RPM's below 2K and see what my MPG's turn out to be. Right now I have an average of 18.2 on this tank with city/hwy mix.

I've had mine off for a while, too. Still get around 30 Hwy and 14 City, lol. It's nice having a solid, non-changing exhaust note, also.

I get combined average of 22-23 stock program with 49K miles. This also getting on it every so often and being stuck in bumper to bumper traffic. When I get to speed I barely rest my foot on the throttle or I use cruise as much as possible, let the computer handle it all. If you drive these cars like your average car it will eat all sorts of gas, you need to make very gentle inputs to the throttle. Not for nothing the perceived speed versus the acutall speed in these cars is decieving.

One neat thing. If you are in cruise and you need to slow down but don't want to use the brakes hit the cancel button, it will slow in 4th Lock-Up. Much better than using the brakes. Then you just hit resume. I use the cruise so alot, it really helps to keep the economy sound, plus a super light foot and very gentle throttle changes.

I get to my cruising speed quicky then I'm very light footed to maintain my speed. I left off the gas to slow down & avoid the brakes if possible. I also make use of the down hill stretches unless there is a slowpoke in front of me.

I got 18k miles on my GXP brakes and they still have some life in them. We have great brakes but very soft(dusty) pads.

In the last 1000 miles my GXP has eaten a few snacks, ie Mustang GTs, BMWs, & more than a hand full or ricers.

Mine did, too, I just figured it was from the tune.

It seems like less strain on the engine, too. It started sounding bad when DoD kicked on and off a lot. I mean, kick on then right off, then right back on, and so on. It starting jerking a bit too. I'm glad I got rid of it.

nope, it's from the DOD being disabled... because the tune doesn't do anything to change the part-throttle fueling for normal driving...

so the better mileage is a direct result of the DOD being disabled/turned off...

How can this be? The system was implemented on these cars to improve mileage, so I'm not sure how it can hurt it. My 2006 Impala SS is driven about 800 miles a week, 95% highway. If turning off DoD will help it, I'm willing to test it out, though in my situation, the car spends half the time in 4 cylinder mode. I'm not sure if there would be any benefit.

Opinions?

I'm sure it all depends on your driving habits/scenario...

if most of your driving is truly 95% on the highway, then DOD may benefit you...

but for guys like me and the other guy, where our driving is 50/50, or even 60/40 city/highway, DOD causes worse mileage....

I went from 18.5 mpg to 21.3 mpg lifetime average -- with having the DOD disabled/turned off...

and my driving is about 50/50 to 60/40 - around town/highway driving...

I just turned my AFM off, we'll see what it nets me, if anything no more 'helicopter' sounds.

That does make sense.

I think I'll be leaving DoD alone. Our typical mileage per tank is around 25. I don't thing turning off DoD will make it go up any!

Disagree. I've been doing 50/50 (measured by time, not distance) driving since buying the GXP. Fuel economy is ~8% better with DOD enabled. The DIC says I'm doing 21.3 with DOD and a fairly heavy right foot.

I really hate the sound of the MF running on four cylinders, that's what has me thinking about disabling it again.

I really think it all has to do with the way one treats the throttle and how loose the drive line is. If you got some miles and you make easy controlled changes with the throttle and use the cruise alot you get some pretty good economy DOD or not.

These cars are very decieving in thier actual speed versus what is percieved. With a big engine like ours one has to be easy with it otherwise you just burn alot of fuel. This has always been the case since hallowed antiquety...

I do not find myself to be a blow hard because I do live on Long Island, and we all got no where to go and fast.
