Just moved so I don't have a CCW in my new state yet, but when I was in PA this is what I carried.....

S&W .45 model 457 (w/hydra-shok JHP)


Used to carry a 9mm, but one night wife and I were watching one of those "life in the ER" shows and we saw something that made me decide to upgrade. Police bring in a perp that they got in a fire-fight with; guy took two 9mm rounds to the face and was still talking ****. While I would always be aiming for center mass, I figure that if I end up hitting the dirtbag high, two .45 rounds to the face and the only person they're talking to is God.

I carry a walther p22....and I love my chic gun! Although I considered getting the glock 26, I figured for my first weapon, I should start small lol. Its hard to carry concealed being a girl - I have an ankle holster that does the job. :-) So did u decide what to get?

How do you like the striker fired pistol? I've been seriously considering the new SR9C. The standard SR9 isn't really any smaller than my Sig P225, which is easy to conceal, but I'd like to keep the wear n' tear down on the Sig.

I have Glock 22 (.40) and the Glock 23 as a carry. I carry 24 hrs / day.

My old carry was a Glock 19 (9mm). All very nice pieces - the G19 is much cheaper to shoot. I had a S&W M&P 40 but was mandated the G22 and have stayed with Glock since. The only misfires I had were frangible rounds, but those allow for clearing drills.

The rule of thumb on ammo that I understand is that you should use no higher rated ammo than what the local law enforcement uses. Typical LEO / FBI here is the G22 / 23 or Sig .40's w/ HP's. If you have a shoot situation you don't want the other party to try to build a case you had "too much" firepower and were "looking for a fight".

Turn the big 2-1 in November, and I've already budgeted for a Kimber CDP II. Not necessarily the most concealable but goddamn is it a fine piece of craftsmanship.

I like the SR9. Hasn't failed at anytime I have pulled the trigger. Very accurate,. I am a big guy and wanted something to fit my hand when I gripped it. Can't stand the pinky hanging off the bottom of a clip if you know what I mean..... Thinking about buying another 1 to have 2 to carry

I got my Springfield XD 40 for $450 and my friend got his XD 45 for $475. Both brand new, both from different stores (so we weren't getting the hook up from a friend or anything). They are great, inexpensive guns. I sold my Sig 226 and kept my XD 40 because I liked it so much.

Need advice, never shot a hand gun in my life, but want one for home defense.

Should I go 9 mm, .40, .45?
Also what are some good beginner hand guns?

Opinions are like ********..............well, you know the rest.

From someone who is no stranger to firearms, I would suggest a revolver over a semi-auto for someone like yourself. I would also suggest .357 magnum, because you can shoot cheap .38 special wadcutter ammo for target shooting, and load up with 158 grain JHP for home defense. No muss, no fuss, just point and squeeze the trigger. Later on, if you decide you like owning a handgun, you can get a semi-auto.

There are many fine revolvers out there, but I'm partial to Smith and Wesson myself. I personally own a 626 that is kept in the nightstand by our bed. It is the gun my wife will reach for over all the other handguns I own.

At $1 a piece (as expensive as my M4) don't think I will be firing them - plus I don't have any way of determining how much damage they will do.

I couldn't get an extra box of LE40T3's, stats look to be better than the Federal Premiums.

My advice is to go to a good gun dealer that has rentals and a range so you can try out to see what works best for you.

I went from a Colt 45 in the Army which I couldn't hit anything with to a S&W M&P 40 which never fit well so I was also a lousy shot, to a Glock 19 (9mm) carry which is an extension of my arm and am deadly accurate with. I can shoot the Glock 22 (40 cal) equally as well and switched my carry to a Glock 23 (40 cal) to use the same mags if needed. Some people don't like the feel of a Glock.

Good self defense loads in 9mm and 40 cal are close in ballistic performance, and the price edge goes to the 9mm. My friend has a 22, he can shoot 10x the rounds I do for the same price, but I wouldn't rely on a 22 to stop someone in your house with a leather jacket on. You want to put someone into shock, and the 22 won't do that to someone jacked up. I'd skip the 45 from the cost perspective - you'll go broke shooting it.

Bryan, In baycity there is a place called Duncans Outdoor, they have indoor pistol and rifle ranges and also have a whole wall of pistols you can rent to shoot on the ranges. there website is www.duncansoutdoor.com . me and my dad go there quite often, they also have pretty decent prices on there handguns. But to start out i would just go there and ask them questions and get on the range.
