Default Turbo Uprising

Ok guys, I got my car tuned last Friday. That night it put down 370 hp and 381 tq at 7.5 psi running a very rich tune. I went with a MPT70, Precision 46mm wastegate, ebay bov, ebay intercooler, FAST 50lb/hr injectors, 3 inch exhaust from the turbo to the y-pipe, Kenne Bell BAP, Racetronix Hotwire kit and stock maf.

I had some sputtering issues with meth turned on. I have a Cooling Mist system. I think it just dumps too much into the engine. My injectors were only at 29% duty cycle so I turned the meth off. I got it retuned this Friday and the sputtering issues are gone! The car feels stronger than it did last week with the 370hp pull. Rob at Modular Turbo guesses it's probably in the 430-450hp range. We never could get a good pull this week because of dyno issues. I can tell you the car is a beast on the street though. Friday evening we took it out on the highway. It pulls really hard in 1st and even harder in 2nd. The road was narrow and curvy so I chickened out on making a full pass. Later that evening the engine died. It's probably the fuel pump or a relay. I had the BAP dial maxxed at 50%. It probably should have been at 10-20%. I'll look at it next week. I'm an old college student, work fulltime, married and I have 3 kids. This is the 5th week of classes and I'm already 3 weeks behind from working with the car and I need a few days to tell the wife that I have to spend more money.

Grumpy James did a great job tuning my car and despite the fuel pump or relay giving up, I couldn't be happier. Rob at Modular Turbo is the greatest. I just can't say enough about his customer service and knowledge of turbo systems. He can provide you with everything that you need to build a system for your car. If you are serious about going fast, I would contact him immediately.

It was just under $4500. I could have saved $500 by not getting the meth kit and the BAP. There are probably some other areas too. My injectors are at 29% duty cycle so may I could have gotten away with 42 lb/hr which would have saved another $75-$100. I think that the exhaust could have been fabbed by me and taken to a welder for finish welding which could have saved several $100s too. Despite the fuel pump/relay issue, I am very happy with it though.

Cool, Post some pics, I'd like to see the set up. Let us know your numbers once you get it back on the dyno. Curious to know if your pump gave up on you. I have a KB BAP, but have a racetronix 255 pump in the tank.

Car started today and has been running fine all evening. I think that the pump probably overheated due to the maxxed out voltage. I turned the KB BAP down to about 3-5% today. The Hobbs switch goes on this weekend. I have some pics in my garage but I'll post more when I find my camera cord. I'll get it back to the dyno soon. I think my horsepower should have been greater the torque. Right now I'm just enjoying driving it!

Here's my dyno run from last week. For some reason it takes a dive at 3500 rpm and starts coming back up at about 4500 rpm. All of my runs were like that. It pulls good on the street though. I'm open to any input.

Spools kind of late, doesn't it? Surprised to see the torque peak after 5,000.

I think that it is because of whatever is causing that loss of power from 3500 to 4500. It has an exhaust leak that I haven't been able to fix.

is there a problem in the tune causing the loss?

It has to be the tune or the exhaust leak before the wastegate. I won't be able to find out for a few days though because my fuel pump went out today. I had that KB BAP adjusted too high and burned it up. What's the true cost of high performance?

How difficult was that fuel pump swap?

Exhaust leak before the wastegate is likely the cause.

Cartuning had it done for me. You might want to try to contact Kevin at Cartuning to see if they can put one together for you.

I fixed my sputtering issue and the exhaust leak. My maf was not oriented in the factory position. I reoriented it and sputtering went bye bye! With the 7.5 psi spring I was seeing about 5.5-6 psi at the gauge. I've changed the springs to 10.5 and I'm seeing 9 now. The power is instant! It pegs the gauge quick once I'm able to floor it. I'd love to take it back to the dyno. I'll probably wind up on the tranny list soon. I'm running a .68 a/r, maybe going to a larger size will add some lag and make it easier to launch. Any input?

Good work man. I'm always excited to see guys trying to something on their own. Good luck with getting it straightened out, and getting the approval of the wife!

just a question. why not go with the cartuning kit? i know its 1500 more but wouldnt it have been worth it for less hassle? or was it a point to make your own kit? ive made alot of crap on my own in order to save bank so i understand.

Wow, lost track of this thread.

What are you using for boost control, the WG spring and manifold pressure, or is there a MBC installed? If boost coming on too early is causing driveability problems, you might consider adding an EBCS system so you can adjust the WGDC to moderate spool up. Some aftermarket units allow you to load several maps depending on driving conditions.
