Default Thinking about buying this car...

Hey all,

So it's time to replace my current car. I had intended on buying my dream car ('02 Trans Am WS6), but have decided that with my son coming in March, and the fact that the roads in this town are HORRID, it can wait until after I graduate and move away (about 2 years from now).

In the meantime I've found this car that I'm thinking of getting, and wanted to get some input on it. Link below, a few highlights: 2007 Monte Carlo SS, red, 98k miles, just under $10,000. That price tag bothers me, and the fact that it used to be a rental car also bothers me. (I worked for a rental car company for three years, I know how poorly the cars are treated).

I'm going down there on Wednesday to test drive it / inspect it. My experience with cars in general is rather limited, and I've never done any in-depth work on a car. So I was hoping the folks on this forum could give me a few tips / pointers on what to look for, what to be worried about, etc. on this particular vehicle.

Thanks for any assistance!

Just my two cents, I would run the other way if it was a rental car. Can you imagine how hard an Ls4 rental car has been used and abused?!

Ya, mine had 90K on it when I bought it, but it was a one owner vehicle, and his DD, on all highway. I have had nothing but good luck with it, and already have almost 15k without and issue, other than the battery. I got it for 10,500, and it was on 06. I say the 07 with 98k, and it is an ex-rental, is a no go.

I would stay away from higher mileage LS4's, simply due to the fact that the trannys are weak, very weak, especially if you want to mod the car any at all. However if the car has any type of extended warranty or the transmission has already been rebuilt it might be ok if you dont plan on modding it. I personally would keep looking, there are deals out there (the rental car thing would scare me as well).

that is to much for a car that has almost 100k miles on it. I paid less for a car that had 78k miles on it. shop around a bit first. Since you will be having a baby soon I would say to either get the Impala SS or the Grand Prix GXP if you really want a car like this. The GXP has tap shift, heads up display with the other doesn't which are very nice. If you haven't read on here yet the transmission is these cars either will fail or last pretty long it all depends how it was taken care of and how it is driven. Most people put a Transmission cooler on and a shift kit which helps out alot. Other than that you should be very happy with whichever you buy.

Oh and welcome sir

Thanks for all the input! I've decided against buying this vehicle. The wife also kind of gave me permission to look into getting the TA early
