Default cutting off stock mufflers

New to the forum. I just traded in my 07 impala lt for a stock 07 imp ss about 4 months ago... Added Cai recently but would still like to modify the exhaust to get a better sound . I was thinkin about cutting off the mufflers and running straight pipes in place of them but dont know if the sound will be too sloppy or overkill for a everyday driver? I definetly want to keep my cat and sensor so it passes pa inspection. Any advice would be appreciated.

Depends on your taste I guess. I don't care for the sound of muffler delete.

On the subject of mufflers, can anyone tell me if the basic factory SS muffler is the same as the GXP muffler? I have both cars in the shop today and the GXP is most definitely louder, at idle and while driving with more interior drone. Both cars have factory exhaust.

I'm guessing the stock pos gxp mufflers are started to deteriorate. My gxp started to get louder and the inside drone was very loud. Lifted the car up and found a large hole in the driver's side muffler. Lift the gxp up and check both mufflers on the top.

You are probably right. If that's the case I doubt if I'll replace them with factory mufflers. The GXP sounds better than the SS.

I removed the stock mufflers on my GXP and I'm a big fan of how it sounds now. With the stock resonator in place it isnt too loud. The car sounds unreal now at WOT and you get alot of people having to do a double take to see where the sound is coming from. When I removed my stock mufflers they had rusted through a bit so I'm glad i got rid of em

I drove a car with the mufflers removed; screw that for a daily driver in my opinion. Sure it sounded cool for about 5 minutes, for a car ride more than 15 minutes would be annoying as hell. My $02.

I can see that. Listening to it shift in and out of overdrive over and over and over and over...I'm worried about flowmasters on the car along WITH the resonator in place. Our neighbor at the lake has a Monte Carlo SS with muffler delete and every morning was an annoyance. Just because it's loud does not mean it sounds good. Personally I thought it sounded like a 77 Chevy half ton that had a busted exhaust pipe. It was surprising to look over when you heard the roar and see a nice shiny late model car. Sorry.

Deleting DoD got rid of this problem for me.

Your car had better still be shifting into OD whether DoD is disabled or not. I'm just saying that it gets awful monotonous during certain throttle tip-in conditions where you have to listen to that over and over.

What you are hearing is your torque convertor locking and unlocking over and over. Mine would do this, say when I was accelerating up to speed and when the convertor would lock when I would reach my cruising speed, DoD kicking on and off would make it lock and unlock about 3-4 times until it would finally stay locked. I deleted DoD in my tune and now as soon as I hit cruising speed it locks and stays locked unless I hit the brakes, accelerate etc. . .

You're right, it is converter lock up, not OD. Does the tune keep the converter from unlocking every time you let off the gas and reapplying? Just curious. I am not really interested in disabling the DoD feature on the car. It's what gives us the mileage we need when used as a work vehicle on the freeways for much of the time.

Anyway, my point is that always hearing the different pitches of the muffler delete or a similar interior droning exhaust is what I don't personally care for. Just personal preference.

No DoD activating/deactivating was making the convertor lock and unlock and making it more sensative to locking and unlocking. The tune did nothing but delete DoD. I agree if I were using it for a work commuter on the highway I would stay with stock or stock volume exhaust setup.

I have my DOD disabled and would never go back, I only lost 3mpg and the car so much better to drive. No oil consumption, no helicopter sound, and my tune has the torque converter unlocking at 25% throttle to avoid any un-needed stress on it.

As for the thread at hand, just get yourself a good muffler, cut off the old ones and straight pipe the ends. Then cut out your resonator and put the muffler where the resonator was. Done deal.

Thanks for the input. Guess it depends on what the car is used for. Ours will have over 200,000 miles on it in the next couple years so 3 more mpg is a big deal to us. The car stays on the expressway most of the day for her job.

94ss06gxp, I noticed that. I go through Shepherd all the time. We have a cottage up in Weidman.
