Mufflers
I want my impala ss to sound nice.. Decent at least... While I'm at it.. I wouldn't mind if I could get some performance out of it... What kind of mufflers/exhust system should I get?

i put a little 1 chamber flowmaster on mine and i like how it sounds. i just replaced the y with a single in, dual out then made new tail pipes.
no real numbers but i could tell a difference throught the rpm band, not sure if that way hp or just from weight savings.
that was my 2nd attempt at exhaust, my first attempt i put some strait pipes in where the stock mufflers were but didnt like the sound. it had that truck with a glass pack sound, was really bad dod kicked in.

DO NOT get Pro Flo Max mufflers, I got talked into them by my exhaust guy after I told him I loved the sound of flowmasters. They sound quieter than the stock exhaust although they are stainless. But after they were installed I had to have them cut out the resonator to get a slight tone out of it.
I decided I am getting BORLA mufflers next week, I haven't heard a GXP with Borlas and I am hoping they sound badass! If anybody has a link to a 5.3 with borlas, it would be appreciated.

I have the catback exhaust on my car and its not loud enough for me so im going with the 4" round magnaflow mufflers, part #10416...having them welded in and the rest of the exhaust welded because it leaks around the piping where theres clamps

Spintechs are the loudest by far. Check out the down pipe thread and look at vroom vroom post of his car, same set up I have and its wake the dead loud lol

I've got Spintechs on mine....Sounds awesome and plenty loud. I'm usually a Magnaflow fan, and I had a pair on the Impala a while back, but IMHO, the Spintech's sound WAY better.

And they're as restrictive as hell, too.
I've got a Flowmaster on my Camaro. Got it for free from my buddy's shop. Had it welded in because the LM1 exhaust was just too much. Definitely noticed a loss in performance, but it all comes back when I open the cutout.
To me, it's the most overrated muffler you can buy. I have no issue with people who like the sound of a Flowmaster, but for performance, they suck.

And as long as the Flowmaster name is around, there will be people who will buy them no matter how much power they lose.
And once the Camaro is done and is retuned on the dyno, I'll make sure we do a run with the cutout closed so we can see how much power lost. it's not the same as comparing muffler to muffler, but it will give a good indicator.

Sorry if I offended you, it was sarcastic humor not me being a dick I was just kidding. And two your other point, ill hack my flows off in a heart beat if there costing me power....but I can't see how spintechs design flows better. I'm not an engineer so I don't know. Once again I apologize if I offended you I'm gonna search the internet for hours now hoping your not right lol.

Anyway, from my understanding, the Flowmasters use an older chambered design that sounds good, but also costs power. There are several threads in the Gen III section of LS1tech that discuss it. Most other performance mufflers use a straight-through design that flows better. There are a few dyno sheets floating around that show anywhere from an 8-12 HP loss when comparing Flowmaster to Magnaflow.
For my money, Magnaflow is the way to go in terms of power, though I do like the Spintechs on my Impala:

Flowmasters will dyno less power than most other performance mufflers, but if you like the sound you'll like them on your car. The spread isn't that large, maybe 10-15 WHP on a 400 HP car. I'll vouch for hooker maximum flows. They are an absorption type muffler that lead to a really deep tone with most of the higher frequencies completely muffled. I've been meaning to shoot some videos, and now that the weather is ridiculously nice I may have to.

Thanks a lot guys now I'm cutting the flows off. I will deeply regret this...maybe its the edge I need. Lost to my buddies 95 z28 intake headerback exhaust and a tune by maybe 2feet. One can only imagine if I had a different muffler....
