Default HELP! Grand Prix GXP engine problem!

I drive an 08 Grand Prix GXP with the LS4 engine and have been having an issue with the stability control system. Every once in a while upon startup or even just driving down the road, i'll get a ding ding and the trip computer starts spitting out errors in this order: "traction control off", "stability control off", then "reduce engine power" all at once. The car has 88,000 miles on it and is well maintained! As soon as you shut the engine off and play with the gas cap, which is what the previous owner told me to do, it'll start back up fine. It only happens every now and then but is happening more frequently. Its annoying when it happens and it shouldn't happen with the way I take care of it. Anyone that can help before i spend a fortune at the shop I'd appreciate it!!

Scan it for codes stored. Replace the gas cap if you haven't already. I would get the traction and stability in the winter when it snows even when there was no slipping due to the elements, could be a wet or damaged wire sensor on the brakes. Never saw anything say reduced engine power. Good luck.

This may or may not apply to your LS4 but my sister owns a 2011 Equinox with the 4 cylinder and had the exact same thing happen to her last year. Flashed service traction system, traction control off and reduced engine power. Upon some research online many people had this issue with the throttle body on the Equinox. It continued doing this for a couple of weeks... changed out for a new throttle body and it hasn't happened in over a year. Not saying this is your issue, but the symptoms were the exact same, so I figured this may give you somewhere to start.

Fact of the matter is, there is a number of things that can cause this issue. You wont really find out until you are able to pull all the codes. The traction control system has its own module so the codes may not be able to be pulled with a Generic OBD2. You may need a tool with additional ability.

When was your battery changed? I get symptoms (2007 Grand Prix GXP) like that when my battery is about three years old, change the battery, and the symptoms stop. Might be worth checking.

Thanks guys, I just got this car so you have given me a few good ideas to check. I might start with the throttle body because the acceleration has been touchy and acting sluggish, and it's nearing 100,000 miles (88,000). Might just need to be cleaned hopefully.

I'm pretty sure hes not going to come back. He is one of those one stop shops who come in begging for help and don't contribute otherwise to the community other then their unanswered question.

His last sign in was 03-18-2015 07:13 PM
