Subject: Transmission fluid Leak Slipping Clutch Or Broken Axle Shaft - keywords crack housing shift slip #PIP3932 - (09/29/2006)
Models: 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt SS
2004-2007 Saturn Ion Redline
Equipped with a 5-Speed Manual Transmission (RPO MU3)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
Some customers have commented about transmission oil in the clutch housing, slipping clutches or broken axle shafts on this model. An analysis of several of these failures has revealed that the problem is due to excessive front wheel hop during WOT acceleration events.
Excessive wheel hop transmits a torsional shock load into the transmission case. This causes the case to crack and transmission fluid to leak into the clutch housing. See photos below.
Recommendation/Instructions:
Stiffer axle shafts and hardware will change the system harmonics and help prevent wheel hop. These planned changes will not be available until the 2008 model year.
Note:: Be advised that failures of this nature are abuse. They are NOT defects in materials or workmanship for which General Motors would be responsible and should not be covered under the terms of the new vehicle warranty. Vehicles with this complaint should be inspected by the dealer and Area Vehicle Manager. A product report should be submitted on each.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
i'll get plates that say "frmarol"
Now that is being a ricer! You know... I see more chicks driving those cars these days... Does yours have the recaro's and the LSD????????
Did it come with the stage II dealer installed? If not dont even try and race a LS4 car... I can screw with them things when there stock just holding it about half throttle, enough to stay a fender ahead. No mater how fast they shift it ALWAYS falls back a half car on the 1-2 lol
Why you got rid of that grand prix after the mods to get this i have no clue...

leather seats, lsd/ so i guess it has recaro's?!?! dunno. doesn't feel like the typical seat. i had some kid in a mcss ls4 car ask me if i wanted to race. so i informed him of my past car. and told him, gimme two weeks.
lol
should be a good time once i get coil overs and other stuff under it. and motor mounts, and axles.
blah
now to do some more fun!
im glad gm stopped the overuse of the "ss" badging on cars that didn't need it. i was waiting for the aveo ss to come out. cause that would have been sweet
Here is some shot of my buddies 06' with a stock non spoliered deck lid. Sharp car.
I tuned all 3 car LOL

The only thing rice inspired is the Evo/STI wing on the trunk, which can easily be deleted.
In fact, all new Cobalt SS S/C's now come with the smaller LS style spoiler on the back, instead of the wing. Apparently California (who else) outlawed "view obstructing" wings on the back of cars, so GM just ships all the cars with the smaller spoiler and left the wing as an option in the other states.
Post come pics, those are really fun little cars.
