Default What the hell is wrong?!?!?!?

Well, I went to the track today, and I'm somewhat disappointed.

The first time I went, 2 months ago, my best time stock was 14.897 @ 93.48 mph, with a 2.239 60'.

Today, the best I could muster was a 14.539 @ 94.63 with a 2.301 60'.

I've put in the K&N CAI, Diablo tune and exhaust and I only improved by .358 seconds?

Two months ago, I attributed my performance (or lack thereof) to bad traction and inexperience. Today, I felt like I was getting better traction (could still improve some) and expected much better times because of it, but no.

What am I doing wrong?

I tried to take the advice that was given to me on here about starting in 2nd and manually shifting to 3rd, but while the car was still pulling, it shifted on its own, before I could do it? Is this supposed to happen?

In fact, my best time was achieved by just keeping it in 3rd.

I don't know, maybe I'm just destined to be slow.

There is a bright side though, and maybe this is what I should be concentrating on. Two months ago, my average time was 15.69, today it was 14.78. That's almost a whole second improvement, but I still think I should have done better.

Oh yeah, another question. There weren't a bunch of people at the track today, so I was able to do one hot lap after another.... run, come back, run again. Do I risk screwing something up by doing this? Is there a limit to how many runs I should do in a row, one after the other?

Anyway, thanks guys. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

0.358 is a huge improvement. Especially with the worse 60' time. If you had matched the first time's launch, I would have expected to see a 0.45x improvement.

Also, I do not know what the temp difference was in Houston between Feb and April runs, but even a 10F difference can make a measurable difference in e.t. (and looking up the average temp diff shows 25F higher in April). How did the weather compare in each track visit?

You did very well.

How exactly does the sea level, and other atmospheric variables, affect track results?

Does anyone know where/how I could learn more about this?

Oh yeah, the temp felt similar. It may have been warmer yesterday, but def. not 20* warmer.

Air is denser. Higher the elevation, thinner the air. Denser air normally can make more power. CAI allows colder denser air into the engine.

Correct. Power is made thru Fuel burning and air providing the O2 that is needed to sustain the burn. If you have more o2 pressent, then you can supply more fuel and more power is made.

It's hard to say what's going on really. If you were able to cut your 60' down you'd pick up a couple 10th's easily. Say your 60' goes to a 2.1. Then you'd see a gain of 2-3 th's in the 1/4.

Also, hot lapping a car is going to make it slower. When the engine temps go up, timming is backed off to prevent detonation.

Next time you go it won't be any cooler, but you could try heading out there. Letting your car cool down. And then make a couple passes with the car cool.

I bet your heavy *** wheels are slowing you down. Put the stockers back on and I'll bet you'll drop another tenth or three.

you improved well. Your 60ft was slower yet you still gained 3 tenths of a second. Not to mention a diablo programmer isn't that great. You probably wouldn't gain hat much from it. A custom dyno tune will be much much better.

Thanks guys, for the help!

Aaron, I was thinking the same thing about the wheels too. Problem is, I've already sold them. When the time comes to get new tires, I'll probably be getting new wheels too. Hey Buff, how much did we decide the stock wheel weighs?

Looking over my 11 timeslips, I actually had a better 60' time of 2.275, but the 1/4 was in 14.755. Guess that was b/c of the hot laps. It was my last run. Damn! I should have calmed down some and waited to cool down. I was just so excited to be able to get so many runs in, I guess I went a little crazy. Well, at least I got some good practice.

Corny, i believe the wheels were 25-27#...can't remember which. Pretty sure they were 25#, b/c the tires were listed at 27# at Tirerack and KISSMYSS said he weighed the wheels/tires and they showed up at 52# total.

I think i'm sticking with 18s when i get to that point...as nice as the 20s would look.
