6 Gears?

What do you think 2 extra gears could have done for the GXP/Monte/Impala?

Well, it would certainly address our weak 2nd gear pull from a roll! I'm sure there are other weak spots, but that is the one I see the most. And it might also increase our fuel efficiency.

It depends? What are the gear ratio's? A lower first gear would make launching harder, but a higher first gear would ease launching and if it's coupled with close ratio's, it would make acceleration better, by keeping the engine in it's powerband. That's of course all else being equal: Final drive, engine redline, tire sizes. Torquey V8's like the LS4, in my opinion would benefit from a 2.5:1 first,3 more close ratio gears, about a 3.55:1 final drive and a .80 OD. Alot of these 6 speed trannies manual and auto's are not performance orientated, the manufacturer's either add a lower 1st gear or add a OD to a already OD trans, a nice gear spread comes in the 6 speed Vipers and some ZO6's. Anyway's, it should make a nice difference, I think the G8 will come with a new 6 speed Auto, but I haven't seen what the ratio's are!

Good point about launching. But like all things, it's just a matter of mastering it. I'll take a harder to launch car over one that's a dog at the top of 2nd gear!
