Default Now my tranny is acting up.

I just noticed it tonight, not really a big deal, but if I'm doing like 65mph on the highway, let off the gas, and manually drop it down to 2nd gear, it will just drop down to idle and coast like it's in neutral. When I get back into gas, then the tach shoots back up and it will accelerate like it should. It's weird, I know I've downshifted this thing before trying to slow me down, and it would downshift like any other car. Anyone else experience this?

Dropping in 2nd puts alot of pressure on the clutchs. Sounds like 2nd clutch is stripped usually not the first to go but very possible if you downshift at highspeeds alot. I do exactly what you described all the time and i havn't experienced this yet. Maybe the car thought you where going to fast to shift into 2nd and you didn't notice and when you got back into the gas you just felt normal acceleration. I've downshifted from 70mph into 2nd no problem tho :-\

Yeah, I know what you mean, at 70mph my car I could manually drop it down into 2nd no problem. I have downshifted it at high speeds a few times before, I wonder if this was all it could take. What a damn shame, the car still upshifts fine, and will downshift to 2nd if you floor it and let it do it on its own. I wonder what the odds are of the dealer covering this. they must be tired of me by now lol.

Actually, now that I think about it, I tried pulling it down into 1st gear too, at like 20mph, and it won't do that either. I don't get it, GM needs to put a stronger tranny in these cars. Heck, the less powerful Cadillac DTS uses a 4T80, and its amazing how much nicer they shift.

Dropping it into 2nd is wearing the clutches and the gears by making them spin faster than the engine at that point in time, but it is more decelerating the car by using the engine and tranny without the brakes. It is bad for an auto, alright for a M6 because they have synchros. We don't have synchros, and our trannys will grenade. As for the tach shooting up, you have lowered the speed at which the engine is turning, so once you peg the gas, the converter locks quickly and the cars takes off. I would really, really, advise you not to do this, we don't have a tranny blanket and shifting down from high RPMs or high speeds will spike and grenade the tranny, possibly even tearing through the floorboards/cabin area....it has happened before.

Do you guys think there is any chance of the dealer covering this? The tranny seems to act fine if you don't downshift it, so I'm guessing the dealer will say everything is operating fine and there is no reason to be messing with the shifter. Oh well, I'm thinking of trading it for a Trailblazer SS anyhow.

Dosn't matter how you drive it if you are under the 36k warranty they will fix it.

Thanks for the info guys, I guess I'll take it in when it starts getting worse. I wonder if it will eventually start to slip on the upshifts as well. I'm not sure how I should complain about this. There are a few TSB's out for a slipping condition during the 1-2 shift, (which my car does sometimes) and if any metal is found in the pan, then they are advised to relplace the transmission. It would be nice to get a new transmission out of this rather than getting my current one rebuilt, but I guess I'm not in much of a position to choose.

Well, apparently one of the bands is broken inside the trans. I should have it back Thursday. In the mean time, I have a Grand Prix GT to use.

Downshifting at high speeds would haze a band...thats probably what killed it.

Yeah they are just replacing the band, I stopped down there yesterday evening to see what the deal was. I saw the car on the lift with the trans pan down, and they said no metal was found so they can just replace the band and everything should be fine.

I'm going to keep an eye on mine. Every once in a while, it will take an extra long time to shift into 4th or OD when accelerating on the highway.

lol why you guys manually shift an electronic auto i will never understand... There is no reason to go past 3rd gear, 1-2 are just meant for holding gears for hills etc... Sounds like TM doing what its supposed to, there is a function for down shift TM in the TCM. Go buy a stick car if you need to shift that bad.

When you are lining up to race on a roll waiting for the trans to downshift on its own takes to long for someone who is determined to make there selves noticed you figured you would have thought about it from a prespective that you aren't looking at. Just because its not a manual dosn't mean you can't use the shifter. very ignorant comment IMO
