Hello everyone,

In the near future I plan on getting a HF downpipe, 1.8 roller rockers (on the way), and a vector tune. What should I do first? I was thinking the DP, then the rockers, then the tune.... Any ideas? Thanks for the input.

Sounds about right. You don't want to buy/do the tune before you do the mods, so that needs to be at the end. The others are interchangeable, but the DP is def. easier so get that done first.

Get the Vector tune first. Have them disable the codes for the downpipe and also raise the rev limit for the shift points for the new rockers. Then get the rockers and last get teh downpipe.

Enjoy the added power in these cars. Its worth it.

This is going to sound bad, I'm sure, but what exactly do the 1.8 or 1.9 rockers do for our cars?

Well, I would not go for over a 1.8 rocker if you do not install new valve springs. I plan on putting in oil restricted pushrods so 1.8's will be fine. Our cars normally come with 1.7's, installing a higher ratio will keep the valves open for a longer period of time thus letting the engine breath better. The rockers will result about 10 to 15 additional hp. I actually found 1.8 Yella Terra's from Patriot Performance for 385.00 which IS a steal. Oil Restricted pushrods are 129.00 and will keep the lifter pumped full of oil so you won't get valve float. They ARE worth it. I hope I answered your question. Best regards.

Right now I have just a FWI and a res. delete. I have a shift kit that has been sitting around for 6 months and better plugs that are a heat range colder to help with any knock. The DP will help with knock too when I get it. My wife keeps a close eye on what I do to the car. : ( By the way, thanks for the replies guys. This site rocks compared to Clubgp!!!

Colder plugs... That was popular for 3800s, are you guys doing it with the LS4 as well?

P.S. I vote DP first...

I had one heat range colder for a N/A 3800 and it did wonders. As long as the spark is hot enough to ignite the fuel then everything should be fine. It only brings the combustion temps down by 5 to 10 degrees. I would recommend putting in a colder plug especially if you live in a very warm climate. The higher the heat the more the degrees of knock...as a general rule of thumb...

I know the concept and did the same with my L36... And these motors run red hot, but I had not heard of anyone doing it yet...

Well I guess I'll be the "Guinea Pig"... LOL! I am surprised the turbo guy isn't running a colder plug. Who knows, maybe he is... I am sure it will help. I plan on doing this as soon as I get some money for new plug wires. A month or two...

Correction Mike. A higher ratio rocker arm does not keep the valve open longer it increases the valve lift. Its like adding a slightly bigger cam to the engine without the actual work. Typically increasing the ratio from 1.7 to 1.8 will increase your valve lift by .033 in. Give or take some. Higher ratio rockers increase lift not cam or valve timing.

The primary effect is increased lift. A higher ratio rocker also adds just a few degrees of effective duration - simply because the valve sees .050 lift just a bit earlier (or later on the way down) in the cam's rotation due to the increased lift rate.

I understand what you guys are saying. But knowing the increased lift due to the higher ratio rocker on the lifter side of the engine there is also increased pressure put on the valve springs due to the increased downward force on the valve side too which means the valve stays open for a fraction of a second longer as well. (This is why people get valve float) This is why I reccommend at least oil restricted pushrods with a 1.8 rocker. When the valve stays open longer (pushed down further into the combustion chamber) there is a more probability of valve float. (valve float in laymans terms = pistons slightly hitting the valves or coming really friggin close) If you have stock shift points or no more than 150rpm higher than stock OR PR's are fine. If you have higher shift points then I would change the valve springs too. I hope I explained this Ok. Thanks for the rant.... lol!

So just upgrade your valve springs?

Oil restricted pushrods are probably great, just don't use Intense parts...

ECM/TCM
Rockers 1.8
Springs LS6 Yellow ones
Push Rods
Hogan Downpipe

I would check out Summit, Comp or Jegs for the Rocker arms, push rods, and springs.

Best place to get parts for the best prices is Ebay. Complete Set of 1.8Rockers, Pushrods, and LS6 Springs for around 400. Cheapest way to go.

I never had any trouble with Intense parts. I do know they had trouble with thier first and second version of differentials but I hear that is corrected now. I know a few people with SC GTP's that have had really good luck with thier tranny's. A friend of mine has been running low 11's for about 3 years on an Intense tranny. Not sure what differential he runs though. I haven't heard anything bad about thier valvetrain parts. I used Intense pushrods in my old GT and they were fine along with thier 1.9 modified stock rockers and PCM. No problems for over 50,000 miles before she was totalled. I guess stay away from thier diff's?... Other than that I think they make pretty good parts. They are the only ones that I know of that have the Oil Restricted Push Rods for the LS4. I will check out e-bay but I am not doing the springs because they are a pain in the a$$ to change. I will be going from and about 1 to 2 hr job to a 4 to 5 hr job for the same result. I won't be changing my stock shift points. I can't wait to get back to working on the car. I hope warmer weather gets here real soon. Thanks for all the replies and advice.

I would not even tell the person I hate the most in this world to buy ANYTHING from Intense. If you need anything else about them, talk to Chris White, who is on this board and also runs Vector Motorsports. YOu can also talk to Curt @ Hogan Performance.

Intense has a HUGE background with problems with the L67/L32 guys and also with ZZP.

IF your looking for places to buy from, here is the list I would go after.
