Oil Viscosity and Oil Filter.
#3
Ive always used Penzoil, and in this car I'm using the AC Delco filter. I change my oil every 3K miles like clockwork, but I have been thinking about going to Mobile 1 Synthetic and letting the oil life monitor tell me when to change the oil. I don't know cal me old school, but I think I would still change the filter every 3K miles, even if I went to synthetic. I do mostly highway driving, when I change my oil at 3K miles the OLM says 66-67% oil life left, if I average that, it would put me somewere around 9K miles on an oil change.

I was just going to ask about Royal Purple?
what do you guys think of AMSOIL?
I was told at the dealer that the oil should be changed at about the 5000 mile mark. Have any of you ever used WIX oil filters?

I used Royal Purple in my Mustang before I got rid of it, but that was a car that saw abit of track time and was not daily driven, but when it was driven it was driven hard. Seemed to work great, just pricee.

Wix filters are excellent filters. Used them at many shops I've worked for. I use Royal Purple 10w30 Oil and a K&N Oil filter HP-1017. Pricey oil change but the car's worth it. Lot cheaper than my 87 MCSS.

I only use AC Delco Filters. FRAM has allot of recalls and allot of metal left in there filters just look at all there recalls. I also use 10w-30 Mobile 1 Synthetic.

If you read about synthetic 5w-30 you'll understand why i use 10w-30 , 5w has additives that lower the viscocity rating enough so they can put 5w-30 these additives break down faster then regular 10w-30. Also if you notice in your manual is says use 5w-30 in weather below 5 Degree's F. The only reason 5w is recommended in there is for the better EPA rating on there mileage...

So you're saying that with m1 5w-30, you'll get better gas mileage, but not as much engine protection as 10w-30 because of the additives they put in it? Then how come GM recommends 5w-30 for these engines?

If you read the manual they actually don't recommend it only temperatures below 5degree's or so. They recommend it because they get pressure to be green gives better gas mileage. Evidently plenty of people have been using 5w-30 had no issues and engines last forever these days. But these are the facts "that i've read about". If your worried about engine parts not being lubricated on startup what really makes a diffrence is if your oil sticks to engine parts after its turned off this is what really degree's wear and if you think about it when 5w cools down its going to be thinner and run off you can look at it many different ways. A higher weight is also better for more worn engines "when you get to that point" because the molecules are bigger and wont escape threw the clearances. To me what is important is that everyone uses synthetic at least. When dismantling engines its crazy the amount of sludge that gets built up into oil galleys. When you take a engine apart running synthetic they are perfectly clean like its brand new.
