Default Beef up the transmission

So, I'm considering sticking with this car. Aside from a shift kit, what can be done to signficantly improve the transmission performance and durability without breaking the bank?

I think the transmission is one of the weakest links in this car and I would think it's the best place to make improvements before putting any more than basic bolt on hp.

I don't mind more expensive suggestions too (I have a feeling they're all pretty costly)...I'm mostly looking for a list of things I can do and how much each would cost (parts/est labor).

Aside from transmission strengthening, I'm also curious to know how much it would cost if I decided to go with 3.29 or 3.69 gearing.

Lets get a good discussion going! It's been a while!

All the parts to improve the transmission are cheap its opening up and putting them in thats expensive. By the time you put one part in there you might as well do them all , meaning have the transmission rebuilt to withstand a higher # horsepower. Couple of grand

A lot of the GXP guys are running tranny coolers. Their cars have trans temp gauges and with the cooler installed, they have all noticed roughly 20 degree lower trans temps.

An auxillary trans cooler is one of the best things you can install for longevity no matter what you do with the trans.

Will any old tranny cooler do the trick or is there one specific to ours? Any links would be great.

And if any gear heads (pun intended) could draft up a shopping list of what to get and why would be awesome...and a good thread for the board.

Everything that can be done to a V6 tranny can be done to a V8 tranny. On my car we did the 300m input shaft, 15/16th chain with 3.29 gears, new clutches and valve body's and better shift kits and custom work.

Oh yeah! theres a place down in Miami called alonso transmissions....They quoted me roughly $1,700 to rebuild the tranny in my 00 SS. That's with all the upgraded parts etc.

Great thanks Mike. I'll consider going to them when I do my transmission. We should get a meet going down there sometime.

Here's a link to Dave at Triple Edge Performance who just rebuilt my transmission with 3.29 GM 1" Racing Chain, 300M input shaft, and upgraded clutch packs and valve body. He really knows these trannys in and out and reasonable on rebuild price. Lots of good info on this site:

Also good info here to take a look at and search in:

Is there anyone else that builds a performance trans (besides triple edge performance)?

From what I've read here and another forum, you can't go wrong with triple edge performance.

I know they have a good reputation, but when you go to their site it says that they are not racing transmissions. They said that there are plenty of others that do racing trans. Just trying to find out who those "others" are.

That can all depend on what upgraded parts you add to the basic cost, such as GM 1" Racing Chain, 300M input shaft. Email triple edge for more info.

Hey Guys,

This is what is going in mine.

PATC 2800 Stall Torque Converter - 399.00 (Ordered 2/24/2009)
ZZPerformance Input Shaft - 359.95 (Ordered 2/24/2009)
TEP Clutch Master Rebuild Kit - 159.95 (Ordered 2/25/09)
TEP Recond. Input Clutch Piston - 19.95 (Ordered 2/25/09)
TEP Input to Sun Gear Bearing - 6.95 (Ordered 2/25/09)
TEP 4t65e Lube Dam - 3.95 (Ordered 2/25/09)
TEP OE Stator Support / Drive Sprocket Bearing - 7.95 (Ordered 2/25/09)
TEP Transgo 4t65e Shift Kit - 59.95 (Ordered 2/25/09)
TEP Channel Plate for GXP/CompG - 7.00 (Ordered 2/25/09)
Intense 3.29 - 15/16th’s Gear Ratio Conversion Kit & VSS 3.29 Reluctor Wheel - 450.00 (Ordered 2/24/2009)

This setup should be great for the car. It has been awhile since the car was itself; a little over a year since the trans. went bad.

Thanks for all the great info! Keep it coming! Transmission is going to be my first major mod once the warranty is up.
