Default Launching in Reverse...

My buddy hates the rev limiter on his GXP, how we can never get our cars past 3,500 in P or N.

He read over on ClubGP how you can hold the shifter between P and R and rev up to redline. So for the past five month he's been doing that.

Sitting at the stoplight on his way into work this morning he saw a Mustang and went to redline and then the shifter slipped into R. His next stop was his *** end clipping a SUV and then slamming into a concrete divider and spinning a little.

He's sore as heck but nothing on him broke, which is good. The body shop is pretty sure the frame is history. I hooked my laptop up and got the black box info out of the ECM and he was doing 43 on impact. Not bad considering he moved 1000 feet back or so and one lane of traffic over after the clip. I wonder if he got under a 1.8 second 60' on that launch....

Body shop is going to check over the car, hopefully nothing on it is too messed up.

I spent the entire ride from the hospital to his house going 'I told you this was going to happen, I told you.' I also claimed first dibs on parts if the vehicle is totaled. So all the rims and his drivers side seat are mine. When I dropped him off his wife started up on him about 'I told you were going to hurt yourself driving stupid! how could you do this to? How could you put me through this.....'

At least he has high strength painkillers.

Fail. You don't need to be revving to redline anyways. Yea, it doesn't sound as good when you rev it, but the limiter is there for a reason. And I'm sure he could have had it removed via a tuner if he was that determined to rev it up. Glad to hear he's okay, but this was just flat out stupid. Guess I'm gonna be careful anytime I see a GP in front of me now especially if I see ClubGP stickers on it. They might back up into me.

He was afraid of voiding the warranty (oh the irony). It is really sad because the little group of car nuts we're both in has a half dozen GM engineers in it. All of them offered to make the rev limiter go away in a manner that the dealer wouldn't notice. Basically rewrite the code so the instruction to limit is still sent, but ignored.

My rev limiter is gone, but he kept his.

I would work 3 days for free to see a video of that.

How do you keep it floored and hit something at 43mph? And why rev it out of gear is the big question.

Thanks, he seems fine and I wasn't even in the car. I was the guy he called to come get him after the paramedics gave him a ride to the hospital. He didn;t want to have his wife come pick him up and bitch at him.

As for what happened. The story I got was that he kind of froze up and jerked his had back too behind him. This lead to the gas staying down long enough to get up to 43 and him jerking the wheel. There wasn't a car right behind him, it was back a bit, still braking to a stop. That driver also swerved, so they sideswiped each other basically, that spun him out into the barrier.

I'm still laughing at his dumbass. I feel bad for him, but still.....

For the rest of his life, every time he goes 'Oh my car could take that car out...' I'm going to chime in 'You mean like that Mustang you took out back in June?'
