Okay, I'll look into it, I still need my exhaust worked on, not adjusted right.
Thanks.

I just wanted to add my experience for those thinking about an exhaust mod. I checked out the Flowmaster 40s and Super 40s and perfer the deeper "rumble" of the Super 40s. They're not any louder, just a deeper sound. I took the advice of 06MonteSS and left the resonator on thinking I can always remove it later. Well, I love to "hear the thunder" (Flowmaster quote) just as it is. Windows up in the car is quiet. The thing I didn't expect was the even deeper sound when it switches to 4 cylinder.

The downside is that every place I go (including the MV inspection station), people come over and ask "What engine is in that car? It sounds awsome."

DennisL... did you use some kind of catback kit, or just swap the mufflers for Flowmasters?

Just checked some pics, his pics he posted looks like OEM tips to me, which in my opinion would lead to a stock cat back minus the muffs, which are prolly super 44's,. I want to hear them now as-well!

These engines are not forced induction, there for do not need as much back pressure to scavenge exhaust, like a forced induction setup.

No catback kit, just replaced the mufflers with FM Super 40s. Oh, and I had the chrome tips cut off the stock muffs and welded onto the FMs.

As I said, I'm very pleased with the sound and it definitely gets attention. I took it back to the dealer for a free pin stripe and the Sales Manager heard the car when they drove it into the service area. He brought 5 or 6 people out to the garage to hear it. I was a little nervous at first but then he walked up to me and asked "Did you put FlowMasters on your Impala?" Although not sure why he was asking, I looked him straight in the eyes and said "Yes I did". He replied "It sounds awsome!"

Yep, I had mine replace with a pipe and the car is slightly more throaty and deeper. No regrets.

I thought that if you have the resonator out and just replace it w/ a piece of pipe while leaving the stock exhaust on then it would make a kind of weird croaking sound when revved up in neutral/park? is this not true?..... also while were on the subject of exhaust, im thinking about getting a magnaflow catback pretty soon and i was wondering if I needed anything that a normal home tool shop wouldnt have to install them. and after adding do i need a tune or anything or am i good to go?

I should clarify, I had a custom exhaust already installed and then I went back and had the resonator removed. I have no clue how it would sound on a stock exhaust. I can't imagine why someone would remove the resonator alone. It probably wouldn't make much of a difference. Magnaflow advertises that their exhaust is "bolt on" so a standard wrench and socket set might do it. As far as a tune...it would be a waste of your money until you have more work done.

My friend is trying to tell me that the !Resonator mod doesn't include putting a straight pipe back into the exhaust. He had a shop quote him a price. $25 to remove it, $50 to remove it and put in and aluminized pipe. I tried to tell him that he wants the $50 deal, and he kept saying how that isn't how it's supposed to be. That, you just remove it, and then he quoted me some people who had done it. Which what he's understanding is the literal translation, but what he wants is the actual translation. IE He sees it as you just remove the resonator, that's it. What he wants is it removed and then the exhaust still be a complete system ($50 deal).

After I even drew him a picture.... (I'll provide that to add to the hilarity) He's STILL adamant that you just "remove the resonator" and that's it. After beating a dead horse trying to convince him what actually is needing to be done, he still doesn't believe me. Then he linked me to this thread and told me to do what I'm doing, since apparently he'll believe you guys lol

SO! What is the question that you need to answer to convince him that what I've been saying is right? It is this: "When you remove the resonator, do you put a straight pipe in it's place, or do you just remove the resonator and drive away?". To make it simpler: "Does he want to do the $25 job, or the $50 job?".

And the awesome pic!
